My name is Sue and I am a homeschooling mom of almost 20 years. In that time I have taught my 6 children from pre-K through Grade 12. Three of my kids have graduated home school and have gone on to be extremely successful in college. One has graduated with high honors and is a civil engineer. The next is due to graduate in December with a 3.9 GPA in criminal justice. The third is studying pharmacy. She is in her sophomore year with a 4.0 GPA. I am still teaching three: a 11th grader, 9th grader, and 4th grader.

As a homeschool teacher, I have taught phonics through physics, every subject and every grade. I am skilled at individualized instruction and enjoy working one on one with a student. I love finding a way to explain a concept in unique ways until the student can understand the information easily.

Besides homeschooling, I have taught for many years in our church's childrens ministry. Also, as a college student I was a reading tutor in an adult literacy program.

Phonics

I believe that some phonics is necessary and very helpful in teaching a child to read. It seems that the schools generally do not do much phonics. I think they do a disservice to their students by expecting them to simply "pick up" reading without giving them any tools to do so. I have always taught my children phonics until they are comfortable with reading. This also helps them to spell correctly.

Study Skills

Being a self-motivated learner is especially important for home schoolers so I have had an opportunity to help develop those organizational and motivational skills in each of my children. Developing these skills servse a person throughout his/her life.
