Hi There!
I have been a special educator and consultant for over 16 years. My background includes successful work with students with autism, developmental disabilities, and behavioral/mental illness challenges. In the course of my teaching, I have developed reading, writing, social skills, and math programs which have proactively addressed individual and small group goals. Students I have taught range in age from 3 to 60!
One program I developed in the early nineties for persons (adolescent to retirement) with developmental disabilities and behavioral or mental illness challenges received national attention because it positively worked. This work also culminated into assistant professorship status at UCD for the Co-Top program for para-educator training.
While I have many years of happy memories as a public school teacher, the most rewarding work has always been with the student and his or her family. I received my B.A. from Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri in 1976, majoring in Psychology, Special Education, and Elementary Education. Since that time, students and their families have taught me so much as well, and inspired me to learn as much as possible. My M.A. was earned in Special Education (Secondary Transition Issues) in 1993.
I am also an author of children's books, and am credited as an editor of manuals for teachers published through Hawthorne Educational Services. Virtually all of my published writing has focused on proactive and non-punitive ways of managing challenges, including bullying. You are welcome to type in my writing name, Becky Ray McCain, for reviews of some of my work. Because I write, I also teach writing, and have helped creative 4th & 5th graders establish some very cool after school writers' clubs to further hone their talents.
The philosophy underlying all of my teaching is twofold. First, every student has gifts, and is important. Right up there by first, every family member is important, so we work as a team. I do vary rates as much as possible because you have enough on your plates in this current economy. I do look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Becky
