I am an enthusiastic teacher whose goal is to share the joy of music with my students. I have experience teaching piano in individual lessons and group settings to students of all ages. I have also taught music theory and music history to individuals and groups. I am able to coach and accompany vocal students, along with all instrumental solorists or groups.

I have Classical training from my masters and doctoral degrees and can teach general music concepts to children and high-school aged students, college students or adults. I enjoy all styles of music including blues and jazz, popular and rock music, and spiritual/church music. I encourage my students to play and study music that interests them personally.

Music Theory

I have taken numerous music theory courses in my bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs in music. I have experience with general music theory, early music, and post-tonal theory. I have taught College Prep theory classes to high school students, and include music theory in every piano lesson I teach.

Composition (Music)

I have experience composing music through both my education and teaching experience. I have had many music theory classes through my undergraduate, masters and graduate study in areas ranging from basso continuo and early performance practice to post-tonal theory. Ear Training

I have experience teaching ear training from group theory classes I have taught at a local music school. The classes included an 8-11 age group and College Prep group for high schoolers. These classes included ear training exercises. I also include ear training in every piano lesson I teach.

General Music

I enjoy sharing music with students and teaching general music is one of the first ways to do this. I use a variety of activities to teach rhythm, notes and musical structure. I have experience teaching students of all ages and abilities, including those with special needs. I have a firm foundation in the field through my undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in music.

Music History

I have taken a wide range of music history courses, covering all time periods. Seminars in my doctoral study have included basso-continuo and early performance practice as well as contemporary music. I teach music history as a part of all piano lessons as well as any piano or theory classes, as the historical context is always important to fully understand music. I teach the history of classical music as well as popular music.

Piano

I have a great deal of experience both performing and teaching piano. I have taught individual piano lessons for 10 years, including children of all ages and adults. I have taught class piano at the college level to undergraduate students as well as coaching college pianists in ensembles. Sight Singing

I have taught sight-singing as part of a college prep theory class for singers. I also assisted with an undergraduate sight-reading for pianists class, which focused on general sight-reading techniques that are applicable to all instruments. I believe sight-reading is an important skill, and include it as a part of all piano lessons.

Voice (Music)

I have accompanied and coached vocalists for over 10 years. I can help singers learn music and understand how to interpret it. I have training in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian diction and can assist singers in performing these languages. I have a firm understanding of vocal technique and can help students produce sound in a healthy way. I teach all styles of music including Classical, music theater and popular.

Songwriting

I include songwriting as part of all lessons. I encourage students to express their creativity through composing their own music. I have experience helping students with both lyrics and music, putting these elements together to create songs. I have experience teaching both voice and piano, and can also coach students who accompany themselves on guitar. I have a thorough grounding in music theory and can help students notate their songs.
