ACT English

A lot of doing well on the ACT is about being familiar with the test format and practicing the kinds of questions you'll be asked. That is the number one reason to work with a tutor when you're preparing-- a good tutor can boost your confidence, helping you understand the way the test is structured and giving you strategies for how to attack each kind of question. It's not all about test-taking tricks, though. Somewhere along the way, you need to actually know some English grammar and style rules, as well as how to do some basic interpretation of different kinds of texts- literary and nonliterary passages. Fortunately, the reading and writing skills tested on the ACT are basic and finite- you already know most of them (even if you think you don't), and the ones you don't know can be learned. English language arts is my specialty-- I was a high school English teacher for years and have a masters in English curriculum design and instruction. I have taught ACT prep classes (both English and Math)for a tutoring company in Denver. I would love to work with you on your preparation for this important test.

Undergraduate and graduate-level coursework in sociology and anthropology, especially relating to global commodity development, post-modernity as it applies to experiences in the American labor force, American political systems, American social movement history, and American education systems and public schooling. Additionally, I have 20+ years of experience working in the nonprofit and public educational sectors, including work as a communications, media relations, and social media specialist which relies regularly on application of social science research and sociological and psychological principles to written communication strategies.

English

My passion and strength lie with English Language Arts and literature. My specialty is composition, and I can help you improve your essay writing as well as your written research and creative projects. I have taught high school English at all four grade levels, and I have worked as a journalist, communications officer, and nonprofit fundraiser, using all sorts of different writing styles and techniques. More importantly, as a classroom teacher I specialized in "writing workshop-style" classes, with lots of one-one-one conferences with students. I have also taught a broad array of literature, from classics like Shakespeare to modernist poetry. I have helped native English speakers and ESL students from middle school to graduate school with major essay and research writing assignments or with reading comprehension and critical analysis. I am looking forward to being your reading and writing coach, too!

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as a writing coach with ESL students at the college undergraduate and graduate levels, teaching English grammar and usage as well as "workshopping" essays, research papers, and journal articles to improve sentence structure and fluidity.

Fitness

I am a lifelong athlete who is oriented primarily towards personal fitness for the purposes of maximizing health and enjoying outdoor pursuits, especially skiing, climbing, mountaineering, and backpacking. I competed in several varsity sports in high school (track & field, cross-country running, and tennis), but since then I have focused on individual sports and less organized environments. I have run several marathons, including the Pikes Peak Marathon in 2010, and summited several large, technical mountains, including Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, and multiple "fourteeners" in Colorado. I am an avid reader of general fitness, training, and nutritional health guides and incorporate safe yoga/pilates, weight training, cardiovascular, and running techniques into my own routines to keep a very low rate of injury. For basic fitness and general training advising, I can be a competent and motivating guide.

Public Speaking

In addition to being a lecturer and classroom teacher for several years, I have worked as a media communications specialist and press spokesperson for nonprofit organizations in various capacities, and I have been a guest lecturer and fundraising event MC on numerous occasions. I have coached my own nonprofit organization's staff on public speaking as well and would enjoy the opportunity to help you prepare for a specific event or simply practice some specific tricks of the trade and get more comfortable with public speaking and making formal presentations.

Track & Field

I am a lifelong runner. I competed in track & field during high school and represented my school in various regional and statewide meets. Since then, I have focused primarily on long-distance running, especially trail and mountain running, but shorter distance running has always been part of my personal fitness regimen. I have finished several marathons, including the Pikes Peak Marathon in 2010, and I have run the Mt. Evans Ascent race (14 miles, 10,000-14,000 feet elevation).

Vocabulary

I majored in English Language Arts and Literature with a concentration in creative writing from Wesleyan University. My master's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder is in curriculum design and instruction in English Language Arts and Literature. I have been an editor of an independent newswire for college papers, a copywriter and editor for fundraising materials for various nonprofit organizations, and a writer and editor of various technical reports and scientific papers. I have had my poetry published in several literary journals. I scored in the mid-700s on my SAT verbal section in high school, and now I teach ACT and SAT prep, especially for the verbal sections. I am a regular crossword puzzler and creative writer.

Writing

My professional specialization, both as a teacher and in other careers I have pursued, is written communication. I can help you express what you need to in writing with clarity, effectiveness, and style. My teaching degree is in English Language Arts, including writing, and my emphasis as a high school Humanities teacher was expository and creative writing, with many of my classes being taught in a "writer's workshop" format. Perhaps just as significantly, I have been a writer in my other work as well. I have written content for various news and advocacy websites, written fundraising and marketing copy for nonprofit organizations, written both technical reviews of scientific literature and translations of scientific research for general audiences. I have written legal and administrative documents for state- and federal-level policy initiatives. I have edited a newswire for college newspapers as well as websites and social media feeds. In college, I also worked as a writing lab instructor, editing and advising on undergraduate and graduate-level academic papers, including papers for ESL and foreign exchange students.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
