I love languages, and for that reason have a Master's degree in Spanish from the University of Colorado, and a Bachelor's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Loretto Heights College, Denver. In addition to the academics, I have significant experience of the Latin culture having traveled, lived, and worked in Spain, Mexico, and Guatemala. I taught a variety of adults, teenagers, and children in Mexico for three and a half years, which included a wide range of subjects from basic literacy (in Spanish) to English for Mexican engineers or executives. Much of this experience was as a volunteer working in poor rural indigenous areas. Consequently, my teaching style has adapted often according to the needs, abilities, and background of the students with whom I was working. In addition, some of these situations were with small groups or one-on-one, which more closely approximates a tutoring situation. Recently, I have been a tutor for the past 5 years in the language lab and GED classroom of a local community college which has again provided contact with international students learning English, as well as American students studying Spanish or getting their GED. I truly enjoy working one-on-one or with small groups as this offers opportunities to get to know your students on a much more personal level, and they, you, as well; and to see more closely the growth and satisfaction that the learning produces in each student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

My first degree was a certification in Christian Education which I earned from a Bible College in the Midwest. At this school I also took many individual classes about specific Biblical books as well as classes in Biblical History, Archeology, Anthropology, and Educational Psychology. Since that first degree in Christian Ed., I have also participated down through the years in many Bible studies in my local churches and also at various Christian conferences I have attended. All this said, one must be humble and open to hear other viewpoints in regard to teaching the Bible, as the Bible has been used to support many terrible, crazy, or well-intentioned, but erroneous ideas.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching/tutoring ESL for thirty years, both in the U.S. and abroad. I also have taught students from at least 30 different nations of the world. My Bachelor's degree was a B.A. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Phonics

I have worked as a volunteer teaching reading using the phonics method, along with teaching the common sight word patterns. This was mostly for adult individuals who couldn't read, but I have also worked with children in phonics--both in learning to read English and Spanish.

Spanish

I have been teaching/tutoring Spanish for over 20 years, and have a Master's degree in Spanish with a linguistics emphasis. In addition, I have lived and taught in Spanish-speaking countries for 4.5 years cumulatively, so have a very good understanding and appreciation for the culture of Hispanic communities. You can expect comprehensive and enthusiastic tutoring.

Writing

I have been teaching/tutoring grammar and writing for international students (and American students) for over 25 years. Beyond that I am a published writer myself, so know both the common, acceptable grammar and writing for standard communication, and the exceptional variety for more creative writing.
