As both a current M.F.A (Master's of Fine Arts) student in poetry at Colorado State University and a composition instructor for college first years, I am experienced in both the art of writing and the labor of it. Before becoming a lead instructor at CSU, I had experience working as a writing tutor for several years, including all kinds of students - from an 8 year old who needed to learn how to read better, to a 30 year old college freshman who needed help with writing a thesis. My broad experience in teaching combined with many years of study in the art and structure of the English language enables me to come up with creative solutions for students who are "stuck." Whenever I hear from students that they "hate writing," I look upon it as a challenge and try to find an applicable way to show them how writing matters in their lives.

I am a patient and enthusiastic teacher, and work with my students towards independence, rather than enabling dependence. I teach my students better ways to learn and how to teach themselves. By providing them with the tools they need to succeed, they will graduate from the assistance of a tutor into a student who can solve their problems on their own, and hopefully, teach others in the process.

Bible Studies

I attended a non-denominational Christian liberal arts college, at which I took courses in Old Testament, New Testament, and Christian Doctrine. I am well versed in theology and biblical interpretation.

Cooking

I have several years of experience in preparing healthy, organic, vegetarian cuisine. Cooking vegetarian does not mean your food has to bland and boring. I specialize in soups, curries, and stews, and also can teach you the basics of bread baking, cheese making, yogurt making, and how to make your own granola. I utilize farmer fresh ingredients whenever necessary. Learn to cook with me and eating can once again be a healthy, fun, and savory activity. Fees will vary for cooking classes, as most dishes include a good deal of passive time (ie: rate will be reduced).

I also offer meal plans with ingredient lists. Tired of getting stuck in a rut? I can make you a personal meal plan for a week's worth of dinners at a time.

Literature

I have a B.A. in English Literature and graduated as the top English major in my department. I can help prep for literature tests and or expository papers from high school to college level classes. I am well versed in British novels, Irish poetry and literature, Contemporary International Novels, modern and contemporary American poetry, and American literature, especially Faulkner.

Study Skills

I have a highly proven method for improving both study skills and organization (the two go hand in hand). Having graduated college summa cum laude (3.95 GPA), I have seen the benefit of my study methods time and again. I focus on how to use time efficiently for the greatest benefit. Studying for hours on end will not help you absorb more information. Rather, I focus on a rotating study schedule that allows both the conscious and unconscious mind to better interpret and retain information. Set up a session with me and we can talk further about my methods.

Writing

As a college composition instructor, literature major, former writing tutor, and creative writing graduate student, I have experience in everything from the mechanics of grammar to the rhythm of poetry. I can teach rhetorical analysis as well as literary explication. I have several approaches to teaching that adapt to the student's learning style and confidence with writing.
