Throughout all of my tutoring experience I strove to afford the best learning possible to my students, not by throwing gobs of data and words at them (or erasers), but by keeping a positive attitude and utilizing various learning methods. Although I don't have a Masters in Education, I do have a passion to help people learn something new, and I have a passion for the subjects I teach. I double majored in Spanish Literature and Language and Graphic Design at Colorado State University and took opportunities to act as a T.A. on several occasions. I was also a tutor for English Composition and Grammar as well as for Spanish as years went on. I was also lucky enough to be asked to proofread a number of Graduate Level papers, and offer points on improvement for clarity and diction choices. I incorporate humor and anecdotes as much as possible to help make a true and lasting bond with my students, and in the process impart my knowledge to them.
At the end of the session I like to assign some informal homework that might include anything from a quick vocabulary review, to hands-on application. I encourage my students to get involved in clubs or after-school activities related to their studies for it is by immersing ourselves in the culture of our studies, we can learn with greater speed and efficiency. On a closing note, we learn when we feel comfortable with our teachers, and I pledge to be a great guide to my students in any of the subjects I teach.
An excellent program for the design of multiple page publications, bi-fold and tri-fold pamphlets, and some news paper templates. A bit different from other programs in the Creative Suite family because in order to utilize pictures and some fonts you need a specific library folder to be linked to the file you are working on. Not an appropriate program for editing of graphics (vector or bitmap) or font-specific changes.
I have good amount of experience with this after doing annual publications (normally 2-4 page bi folds) for the Art department at the College I attended. Likewise when I was a T.A. I was required to know the entire Creative Suite from Adobe in order to help out the students in the class, and this program was utilized quite a bit.
Having a Graphic Design Major has truly helped me learn much of the Adobe Creative Suite programs and Photoshop is no exception. Over the years I have used Photoshop for everything from Painting Digitally, to Refining Photographs. It is an excellent program for all levels of Photographic touch-ups for artists, as well as casual users who want to apply quick fixes to photos of the last family reunion. Also, Photoshop allows you to make PDF format pictures, enabling users to create protected and copyright enforced materials.
Drawing is one of the preliminary arts utilized in many other subsequent forms of design, sculpture, painting, and even fibers. Students who put effort into improving their abilities within Drawing see substantially improved results related to draughtsmanship, composition, and more cohesive final pieces. This is not to say that drawing is devoid of its own merits as a Fine Arts medium, for there are many accomplished artists who view Drawing as their ultimate goal. By learning how to effectively draw, students are more capably able to plan out future projects and better communicate their ideas in a finished piece.
Because of my Graphic Design degree I was required to take 2 Drawing classes, a Foundations Drawing and Drawing I. I opted to continue taking classes and also went through a Drawing the Human Figure class, and 2 additional levels of drawing, Drawing II and III. I also was the T.A. for a semester responsible for the weekly night class for Life Drawing where I was responsible for a group of students and a model for a couple of hours.
I am a firm believer in cross platform knowledge as it relates to Operating Systems and as such have a good understanding of Mac, Linux, and PC OS's. That being said, I have always owned a PC and am more comfortable with the Problem Solving and solution giving with the PCs. Troublesome things can happen in regards to Internet Connectivity, Software and Game Upkeep, and PC to PC Communication. Throughout the years I have given much help to friends and relatives when it came to any Technology issues that cropped up and just recently I incorporated a Media Hub that streams all of my media through my network and can be updated via my PC downstairs. I am more than willing to teach classes based on anything related to Microsoft Windows OS's from Windows 95 through Windows 7.
Painting was another of the required classes in the Art Department during my tenure as a Graphic Design student in College. However, because of this class, I came to understand and appreciate the nuances of this branch of the arts much better. Color, line, depth, and texture all play a vital role in the total composition of any work, but they are especially crucial in Painting. Although I find myself most comfortable with Acrylics and Water Colors, I can also give lessons on oils. Another integral facet of Painting is the ability to prepare a canvas, or at least know a few good outlets that can sell them at a respectable price. Although basic drawing skills are important, you can pick up Painting before and still survive in the art world. A study of this class would also cover color theory, as it is important to know the differences between local color and non-local color usage as it relates to viewer impact.
Photography is an excellent medium in order to get ideas across quickly, and efficiently. Because of my background as a Graphic Design student I initially used a camera just to obtain photographs to use as references for backgrounds, textures, or studies. However, after desiring more of an understanding of the intricacies of photography, I came to see great merit in the composition and planning of a well executed photograph. My own experience helps me teach others about the trickier subjects in photography such as aperture, flash timing, focus, and lighting. Whether you are using photography as a means to gather reference materials for other projects, or you see photography as an end goal, I am confident I can help you come to a better understanding of the science and art behind it.
Even with the abundance of social media like Facebook and Twitter, it is still vitally important that people can communicate directly with others in order to realize specific personal or corporate goals. By effectively communicating with others, or groups of people, a person is more apt to gain their confidence and increase their ability to shape the world around them. Whether you are in a leadership role or take a back seat away from the spotlight, being able to speak to groups is still part of interacting and transmitting crucial messages, addressing looming deadlines, or revealing valid concerns. With the right tools such as eye contact, a clear voice, a concise message, and a dash of humor, you can realize many of your own personal goals as they relate to interpersonal communication with those around you.
Throughout my academic career I have had to taken several Public Speaking classes, but I chose to take other supplemental courses to better understand the ideas behind Public Speaking, which included a Socratic Seminar and Upper Division Oral Communication classes. Similarly I have been in leadership roles over the years in Boy Scouts and at my job where I was expected to deliver prepared talks about specific topics.
Speech is, in essence, the evolution of Public Speaking. This is because Speech is the culmination of effective Public Speaking principles in order to illicit a more powerful response from the target audience. For example, all presidents have had to make public speaking appearances, but when truly momentous events occur, they are marked by the presidents' speeches. I have been lucky enough to write some speeches for people in need of a strong message, usually related to Emcees, hosts, and other figures for public events. Similarly, because of classes that required Public Speeches, I was able to hone my understanding of how to make and impacting speech.
We are now in an age where employers are no longer just asking "Where have you worked?" and "What experience can you bring to this position?" but also "Do you have a personal website we can look at?"
Because of this shift, many people are realizing the importance of being able to create a website, both for themselves and for others. By learning good practices in design, how to easily incorporate new material, and update photos, students will be able to competently create basic web pages in the future. Basic (X)HTML and CSS coding with Style Sheets are also integral to this new education, and if necessary can be taught as well.
I was fortunate during my schooling in Graphic Design to be able to incorporate (X)HTML and CSS into my curriculum. On frequent occasions I was also asked to help others in the class and stayed late to answer questions.
