With several years' experience in the business of public education, I am well qualified to tutor you--no matter how old you are! My favorite academic areas of expertise include English Language Acquisition (ESL), English Literature, Journalism, Creative Writing, and Speech (oral presentation,debate,theatrical reading,storytelling, and more).
In a previous career as an Educational Research Assistant, I counseled and tutored dropouts in GED Preparation, as well as strategies for successful re-entry into educational settings. Since then, I have taught and tutored students of all ages--from elementary School on up through adult continuing education.
My philosophy about teaching and learning is this: Every student can learn. It's the teacher/tutor's job to discover strategies for motivating and empowering their students to that end, or should I say,"beginning"!
As an ESL instructor, I am currently certified in the United States to teach English language to students in grades K-12. For the past ten years I've been doing this, full-time, in the same school district. I was recently designated "Teacher of the Year". Prior to that,in another district, I worked part-time as an educational research assistant, as well as teaching ESL. My very first students were from Pakistan, and they spoke Urdoo--only. I've had students from all over the world, since then. As well, I've been involved in staff development, training teachers to use SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) for planning their own classes to better serve English language learners. With over ten years experience in the business, I am qualified and pleased to work with folks of all ages.
As an ESL instructor for the past ten years, I've well-versed in the subject of phonics, the science of sound. Along with language acquisition strategies, I have been charged with teaching reading, too. When I first started, the program "Hooked on Phonics" was popular in the public schools. I enjoyed working with that, but I came to realize that phonics wasn't enough for some readers. This is especially true for ESL students because understanding spoken English starts with a grasp of the the smallest units of speech--phonemes. I discovered that by scaffolding phonics with a good background in phonemes, I could help students develop confidence and capability for listening to the details of sounds. Of course, regular practice and assessments will assure students continue demonstrate progress with phonenes, phonetic language, and, eventually, correct spelling every time!
