As both a current M.F.A (Master's of Fine Arts) student in poetry at Colorado State University and a composition instructor for college first years, I am experienced in both the art of writing and the labor of it. Before becoming a lead instructor at CSU, I had experience working as a writing tutor for several years, including all kinds of students - from an 8 year old who needed to learn how to read better, to a 30 year old college freshman who needed help with writing a thesis. My broad experience in teaching combined with many years of study in the art and structure of the English language enables me to come up with creative solutions for students who are "stuck." Whenever I hear from students that they "hate writing," I look upon it as a challenge and try to find an applicable way to show them how writing matters in their lives.
I am a patient and enthusiastic teacher, and work with my students towards independence, rather than enabling dependence. I teach my students better ways to learn and how to teach themselves. By providing them with the tools they need to succeed, they will graduate from the assistance of a tutor into a student who can solve their problems on their own, and hopefully, teach others in the process.
