I have had several "careers" in my life, but my favorite one has been teaching 4th graders for the past four years in Las Vegas. I also did substitute work for a year and was an AVID tutor in Las Vegas high schools working with juniors and seniors on college prep work. I enjoy working with young people who are really interested in learning and are open to new ideas and methods to expand their knowledge and skills.
Besides having 30 graduate credits in education from Sierra Nevada College, I also have a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master's in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. Most of my life, I have worked in science and medicine, and I have publications in those areas. I have even worked in a pharmaceutical company.
I had many wonderful mentors/teachers in my younger days as I started my career, and later, I enjoyed teaching visiting scientists and new workers to our research labs. When I finally retired from my science work, I decided I wanted to work as a teacher with kids and young adults, especially those who were motivated to learn but struggled with some subjects and concepts. I love to see kids "get it" when I have done a good job guiding and teaching a difficult point.
Because of all of my experience with adults and children, and my own academic background, I think I can be helpful with many subjects and age groups.
