I earned a BS in psychology, minor in political science, then went to graduate school at UGA; I earned a MS in Neuroscience, BS in biology, MS in Cell Biology, and PhD in Cell (Molecular) during my time at UGA. I was always doing research and teaching many courses, I was always available, anytime, and would do ANYTHING to help other students learn.
The head of the entire Biological sciences at UGA, Dr. Mark Farmer, wrote a letter on my behalf for a teaching position at a community college, and was considered over qualified. Nonetheless, in his letter he wrote, "with a mind that races 110 mph and an energy level and intensity to match, I can honestly say that I have never encountered another graduate student who put in longer hours, or approached his work with more diligence than Rich. Rich D possessed an exceptional mind and an almost indefatigable energy. Rich D quickly became one of the most knowledgeable students in our department (though I transferred from psychology so had to take two years of hard science curriculum simultaneously). For a graduate student to take on such a project is impressive, to do so by way of self instruction, as he did is is truly remarkable." Lastly, I will add what he said while teaching a TEM course, "where he did an exceptional job. Rich's dedication to students was unflagging and it is safe to say that if the students in the class were compelled to put exceptionally long hours (and they were) then Rich consistently outdid them. He was there for all of the students, all of the time and he took his teaching assignment more seriously than than anyone I had before, or since."
I taught Neurobiology, for Dr. James Lauderdale, in TA capacity for a couple of semesters and had the instructor write a letter as well...I will paraphrase less by want to extract the germane information about my strengths. "Rich was a favorite with the students. He is always willing to help students with the course materials and ran a weekly review session on his own ... where Rich demonstrated excellent knowledge of the material and interacted well with the students. Additionally, Rich often drew upon his own research experience, or other analogies, to help students understand the material. Rich was, and remains one of the best neurobiology TA's in the long history of the class." He closed by saying, "Dr. Rich D is dedicated to preparing students for success whether it be in the real world: or continuing their education, and I think... would benefit from having him on the faculty." I like to use the words of esteemed professionals to describe my abilities, rather than list them myself.
The degrees in psychology imbue me with insight in memory formation and consolidation, and I know the best techniques and often adapt to the students needs. I used to tell students that if the came to my review sessions, I can promise them a C, and higher depending on how much the work, and their innate abilities. In all programs there are cut classes which are hard hurdles to get over, once over, the finish line is close. I can teach Biochemistry, absolutely and biology class, statistics, undergraduate psychology, any neuroscience curriculum, and all with the same passion I have always had.
I love learning and tutoring and can provide a stack of over 50 letters from students thanking me for helping them graduate, and move on with their career. As an undergraduate I was asked to tutor my peers in several classes, one a unique honor called a Student Special Service, where 12 students form university were chosen to tutor the hardest classes across the university. Again, I received exemplary ratings and was asked to repeat but was moving on to graduate school.
Dr. Farmer said "you will likely never encounter a a man like him again" and I am proud of being odd in this way. Because I love learning, love helping others learn, and to find a course that is befitting for them.
I am quite pleasant in disposition, having been a lifelong athlete, who transitioned to academics; I have a different attitude than book worms that rarely interacted with other students. So I will bring every ounce of ability that I have to help anyone get the most out of their education. I look forward to becoming a part of your academic pursuits, as I feel, that you can not find a better person to help you learn than me. I have taken so many courses, I can teach/tutor almost any undergraduate course, but listed those where degrees ensure sanctity.
I am interested in this type of work, given my education, because of my daughter. She was born just after I finished my doctorate, and in the time since, I have come to realize, my original career ambitions would cost me too much of her life so I have had to change my ambitions, and goals, to allow me to be the integral part of her life.
So, I thank you for reading this, and giving me the chance, for if you want, I can promise you that I will help you pass any class! As long as you work with me, of course, but I know that I can pair with anyone and get them to understand the material, like they didn't think possible. It's a gift that I possess, like everyone has their own unique place, this is where I really succeed.
Dr. Richard D. (aka Doc, or Rich)
