The best teacher I ever had was my eighth grade History teacher. She didn't teach me a lot of history. I learned that for myself. She taught me how to learn. We, each of us, develop tools that we use to remember those things that matter to us. Learning is just that, finding the magic in the subject and applying the right tool to remember the matter.

My task, as a teacher, as a trainer, a mentor and a tutor, is to help each student discover the beauty and fun in every subject matter, and to find the connection that makes that subject matter. Then, together, we can find, or build, the tools that will help the student remember those things that matter.

I want to make learning new things about the world, the universe, ourselves as human beings, fun and special. I hope I can be that special teacher to you, or to your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

My career evolved beginning in business as a retail store manager.

From that point, I worked with non-profit adult learning organizations as a trainer and program specialist and finally director.

Out of that experience, I took on the role of Human Resources Director for a large chain of bookstores and from there, my career has focused specifically on workforce development and training.

I have more than 15 years of hands on experience as a trainer and Workforce Development Specialist in both public and private sector environments.

And in that capacity, I have also spent the better part of the past ten years in a recruiting role.

I have worked the full spectrum of the Career Development process.

Elementary (K-6th)

I completed the Metropolitan State College Reading tutorial program for elementary level students. I have substituted for elementary and middle school level classes that included reading, study skills, elementary level math and French/Spanish beginning level classes. I completed all coursework for teacher certification through Metropolitan State University Teacher Certification programs.

Social Studies

I worked with youth in pre-GED classes as a teacher for more than 5 years, with a focus on Social Studies and other core subject areas. I was both a teacher and Program Director for Pre-Citizenship classes for lawful Permanent Resident Aliens for 3 years prior to that. My minor while studying literature in college was Sociology.

Study Skills

As the Director of Programs for a respected non-profit organization focused on providing educational opportunities, including GED, ESOL/ESL, Adult Basic Skills, Reading and Writing skills, I was not only responsible for teaching our students, I was also responsible for training and mentoring more than 300 volunteer tutors each year in teaching learning and study skills.

In subsequent positions since the position with Adult Learning Source, I have worked with at risk youth in GED and Basic Skills workshops, helping those challenged learners with study, reading and writing skills.

From 1999 to 2002, I was working toward teacher licensure at Metro State College in Secondary Education with and emphasis on Reading. Unfortunately, personal circumstances did not allow me to complete the entire licensure process, however I was able to complete all of the required coursework.
