My tutoring experiences have been varied. I have tutored for several organizations around Denver and also for myself.

My last experience with an organization was with a private center. I worked for two going on three years for them. They had a specific program they wanted you to use. and a wonderful selection of materials. I worked with one first grader for about a year on Reading and Printing. We worked on Phonics and reading aloud. I then had him write two sentences about what he read. I enjoyed my experience here.

I tutored a young man in Middle School. He was Special Ed. He read Kindergarten books. I used “Dr Jean’s” Phonics CD of songs and also Starfall on the computer. He also enjoyed measuring things like our motor home and the dining room table.

I tutored for a child in Littleton for several years. She had a Reading and Writing program. She used Linda-Mood Bell Phonics program which consists of pictures of tongue, mouth, teeth etc to show children how to pronounce sounds and words. Some schools were using it at that time but most have since changed to other programs.
Rosalie moved on to California and her partner continued tutoring there.

My methods consist of finding at what level the student is reading. My goals are: to use Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Fluency to improve a student’s reading. I am also interested in assisting stimulating a student’s learning and making it fun and not a drag. So encouraging them and building their self esteem are also important..

My goal for students in grades 4-6 again is to find out the student’s Reading level. Do they need a review of Phonics? Are they reading word by word or in groups of words? I use techniques for helping them with Reading Comprehension. Short quizzes after I ;have covered something help me to know if they learned that particular item.

I also motivate students by having them earn stickers. A graph or chart showing the student’s progress can help the student see how he or she is doing.

In Math, for students in grades 4-6, I have them work on multiplication and division facts I also find out what they are doing in school and proceed from there. Students at this age often need help on long division, fractions decimals, and percents.

In Language, we work on grammar, word usage, parts of speech, types of sentences and punctuation. i also find out what goes on at school.

Writing needs to be addressed sometimes. Writing graphics help. I also work on main ideas and details. Using transitional words can improve a student’s writing.

For Middle Schoolers it’s much more detailed and intense. Students need to advance their skills as things s are getting more difficult as they prepare for High School.

These are the methods I use as a tutor to improve student learning and bring them up to grade level. I know we want these students to be able to succeed in life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored Math basic skills. I am good with basic skills: multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. I use Math facts and clear Math techniques to tutor.

ACT Reading

I love to teach Reading. I feel it is my gift. I have tutored Reading for several organizations and for myself. I help students with Reading components like Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension.

ASVAB

I am a certified teacher in the state of Colorado. I am qualified to tutor you as I have a good background in English, Reading. and Math. I have an endorsement in Reading, which is my specialty and use Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Fluency to assist individuals. In Math I usually work with fractions, decimals, per cents and Algebraic expressions, and Geometry.

Bible Studies

The Bible is a complex book. It has two parts: Old Testament and New Testament. It tells the history of the Jewish people and is composed of 66 small books. I studied New Testament Survey in College and we studied and traced Paul’s four missionary journeys.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am state certified in K-6. I have taught the basic subjects to this age group. The subjects are Math, English, Spelling, Reading, Social Studies, and Elementary Science. I also include writing, both manuscript and cursive. Besides this, writing can be of a composition nature, too. Many schools even have Kindergartners writing. It amazes me what is expected of these young children as some of them don’t know their letters yet.

Elementary Math includes different parts. Children in K and 1 need to learn about our number system and be able to count 1-20, and 1-100 respectively. Simple addition and subtraction problems and simple story problems are usually part of the curriculum.

Elementary Math

I have taught Elementary Math and tutored it. I am fairly good at Math. I use a lot of Math facts and look for skills that need work.

Elementary Science

I have taught Elementary Science. I have the students do experiments and use the Scientific Method. Terminology is also very important and understanding basic concepts.

English

I love English and am good with grammar and sentence structure. I have taught Elementary English. Parts of speech are something I teach well.

ESL/ESOL

Pictures help with ESL. Basic knowledge of English like subject verb agreement is something students can work on. Sometimes it helps students to know some customs and idioms. English has a lot of irregularities.

GED

I am a licensed teacher and have helped students with their GED prep. I do a good job in helping students to study for subjects and for tests.
I want to help students succeed and use their great potential.

Geometry

I have taught Elementary Math which often includes Geometry and I have taught it. Geometry has a lot of principles and rules. it includes polygons, formulas for areas and angles, which I stress in tutoring.

Grammar

I love grammar and I have taught it to Elementary students. It is one of my strengths, which is one thing I include in tutoring. I teach parts of speech and sentence structure.

Literature

I love Literature and Reading. I have taught Literature. I read 100 children’s books for my Master’s Degree in which I majored in Reading. I help students find the story elements, vocabulary and reading fluency.

Macintosh

I have a MacBook Pro. I have learned much about it by taking some classes at the Apple Store and by working with it myself. A Mac has a dashboard at the bottom of the computer where all the parts of the computer are located.

Microsoft Excel

I have worked with Excel some. Excel is a very broad-based Math program. I have used spread sheets on my own for groceries and camping supplies and mileage.

Microsoft Word

I have attended classes for Microsoft Word. I also use Word myself in writing letters, resumes and other documents. MS Word is a great program and is used in many schools for the students in doing research and other subjects.

Phonics

There are many Phonics programs. Wilson has been a recent program that has been widely used. Wilson orally goes through the combinations such as diphthongs and digraphs, long and short vowels.
I am familiar with Wilson. Wilson is even used in Middle School. Wilson also has pages to read with sentences of words we have gone over.

However, I think a good teacher can teach Phonics and does not need anyone’s program, but can have success teaching Phonics.

Prealgebra

I have taught Prealgebra. Prealgebra has many concepts which will help students when they take Algebra I and II. These basic algebraic expressions are important for students to know and I include them in tutoring.

Proofreading

As a teacher and tutor, I have proofread many essays. In teaching I had a grade for content and one for grammar. To proofread, one needs to look for a main idea and details. Other factors are spelling, subject verb agreement, English grammar including word usage and punctuation. Run-on sentences and sentence fragments are something else for which to look.

Public Speaking

I took Public Speaking in College and have given a few speeches. There are several different types of speeches: Persuasive, Informative, Narrative etc. A speech needs to be addressed to a certain audience, The parts of a speech are Introduction, Three to Five Main Points and details or examples and finally the Conclusion.

Reading

I love teaching Reading and majored in it while getting my Master’s Degree. Reading different kids of material is studied and read differently. Knowing what the story is about and what problem is solved and how. Being able to take notes helps a student remember what he/she reads.

SAT Writing

I am qualified in tutoring Writing. My method is to assist students with a topic sentence in the Introduction, then write three details to go with the topic and finally a Conclusion. Vocabulary, Sequencing, and using Transitional words are other assets.

Social Studies

Social Studies is comprised of history, geography, people groups, Government, and relationships. I taught Social Studies to mainly fifth graders and sixth graders. When students study other countries, they can relate to the customs of other countries and their governmental structures.

Sociology

I took Sociology in College. it tells us about the social problems of our culture and time and possible solutions. It also explains how our government handles these cases.

Spelling

I have taught Spelling. Knowing Phonics to sound out words helps along with breaking words into syllables. Spelling also includes definitions of words.

Study Skills

I am a qualified and certified teacher in the state of Colorado. I can help students with study skills by assisting them in note-taking, being organized, and helping them pull out important information from their reading materials. I have assisted in these very skills and students have been successful.

Vocabulary

I have also taught Vocabulary. Vocabulary includes meanings of words. Another added help is knowing the part of speech of the word.
