Hi there! My name is Marta!

I have an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and English with a minor in Math from the University of Denver. My favorite part of studying chemistry was when we were given an unknown compound and told to figure out what it was! Throughout my undergraduate career, I volunteered to tutor 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in subjects such as civic engagement, English, and math.

After receiving my bachelor's degree, I spent some time studying Portuguese. I am currently working on completing a Master's Degree in English from the University of Denver. I have just finished an 18,000 word thesis on rhetoric in Shakespeare's plays, Richard II, Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V. I also studied Latin during my time in graduate school.

I currently work as an editor for a publishing company that publishes biology lab manuals for colleges and universities in such areas as anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, zoology, botany, general biology, and pharmacy technician books. We are also starting to publish chemistry books!

I'm glad I get to spend a lot of my work day reviewing scientific concepts and my spare time working on essays. I thoroughly enjoy learning new subjects and teaching the ones I know and would love to help you understand more about difficult concepts.

American History

As George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Knowledge of history, both global and local, helps us to benefit from the mistakes made by our ancestors, and it is a field in which there is always more to know. I would be happy to share my knowledge of American history with you!

Biology

Besides having a science background in my undergraduate studies, I currently work for a publishing company that produces biology lab manuals, so I am very well-versed in general biology concepts, such as cell structure and function, diversity of life, and genetics.

Chemistry

Chemistry was one of my undergraduate majors. I studied general, organic, inorganic, analytic, physical, and biochemistry. My strengths are in the general and organic sub-fields of chemistry.

Vocabulary

Being able to use the exact word to describe or explain your meaning is an important skill, and I can teach Latin and Greek roots as well as teach vocabulary from weekly lists.

Grammar

Grammar was the first topic of study for a young Roman in the classical age, and there is good reason for it. It provides the basis for being able to reason logically and compose arguments well. I can assist in helping you or your child learn about prepositional phrases, relative clauses, subject-verb agreement, and any other questions you may have about grammar!

Latin

I have taken four semesters of Latin while studying for my Master's degree. Learning this language is a must for anyone who is interested in knowing the roots of many English words. I can assist in the development of basic Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary.

Reading

I have been reading voraciously since I was a young girl, and my undergraduate and graduate degrees are both in English, providing me with ample opportunity to develop my reading skills and comprehension further. I am able to assist you or your child in pulling out the crux of the topic and extracting additional implied information in order to best comprehend the reading material in front of you.

Writing

I have spent many years writing papers for English classes, and each essay I write makes me that much better at organizing my thoughts and expressing them as fluidly and clearly as I can. I can tutor the basic five-paragraph method as well as work with you or your child on longer and more complicated essay formats.

Portuguese

Besides being born in Portugal, I have been studying my native Portuguese language since 2006 and have a good understanding of both grammar and vocabulary. I would love to share my knowledge of this wonderful language with you!

Astronomy

Astronomy is a field in which I have much interest. Besides taking courses in my undergraduate work, I try to find as many opportunities as possible to go out and view the night sky and learn about deep sky objects. I would be thrilled to share my knowledge of astronomy with you!

Geography

Geography is one of my favorite subjects. There is so much to know about the world around us. When I was in seventh and eighth grade, I participated in National Geographic's Geography Bee, and since then, I continue to learn about geography through studies and travels.

English

I have an undergraduate degree in English and will shortly have a graduate degree in English as well. I have spent a lot of time working on grammar, vocabulary, composition, and literature, and I would be glad to share my knowledge with you or your child.

Anatomy

Besides taking anatomy courses in my undergraduate work, I work at a publishing company that produces anatomy and physiology texts, so I am very familiar with the concepts and terms used in this area. I would be thrilled to share my knowledge of anatomy with you!

Literature

Literature is one of my greatest loves. I have an undergraduate degree in English Literature and will receive a master's degree in the same within the next year. The majority of my studies are in British literature, having gone from Beowulf to Dickens, and I would be happy to assist you or your child in understanding plots, characters, symbolism, and themes.

World History

Spelling is vital in this day and age of "textspeak." I can help teach rules of spelling and go over weekly lists to build up a student's spelling skills.

Elementary Math

I minored in mathematics during my time as an undergraduate and would be able to provide basic math help to elementary and middle school-aged kids, from long division through algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Elementary Science

I studied chemistry, anatomy, and physics during my time at the University of Denver, and I would love to assist you or your child in learning about the wonders of the world. I can teach the scientific method, how to develop a hypothesis and test it, and more about the world, both big (the solar system and beyond) and small (molecules and atoms).

Public Speaking

I give presentations at work, and I have also studied classical rhetoric in my Master's degree. I can assist with the development and arrangement of expository (informative) and persuasive speeches, style, delivery, and tips to work through performance anxiety.

Organic Chemistry

I successfully completed a year of Organic Chemistry at the University of Denver, receiving a grade of A in each of the three quarters in lecture as well as lab. This was one of my favorite chemistry classes, but I understand that the topics are not easy for most students. In my studies, I have read many classic works, including those by Aristotle, Plato, Cicero, Virgil, Horace, and Julius Caesar. I have also studied four semesters of Latin and have a good knowledge of Greco-Roman history. I would be thrilled to share my knowledge of this foundational era in Western Civilization with you!
