I am an experienced college instructor with a vast knowledge of human body and its operation, biological systems and science in general. I have a PhD in physiology and a BA in biology, physical education and secondary education. I have taught college level (medical and undergraduate) students for years and would enjoy the opportunity to help you learn how biological systems work.

My philosophy regarding education is to emphasize understanding and minimize memorization. What is memorized can be easily forgotten, what is understood provides the framework for additional learning. Everyone learns in their own way. The objective for the instructor is identify how the student learns and to convert the information into a format that promotes learning. The explanations should be in terms that the student can relate to. This method makes its easier for the student to retain the information and to build on their knowledge.

If I sound like someone that you feel could teach you and help you to achieve your objective, then feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I teach anatomy and physiology from a medical perspective in that most of my students are in medical programs. I emphasize understanding over memorization. Once you understand the objective of each of the body systems, understanding the mechanics of the system becomes a lot easier. I use the everyday world to help students understand how their body works. The Cell is like a town with its own administration, police, manufacturing, sanitation department and more. Once the basic concept is understood, then it is applied to a specific situation and we look at the details of how things are done.

I would be happy to help anyone learn the marvels of how the human body works.

Biology

I have taught many levels of Biology, from the basic high school courses to accelerated university courses. Having taught a wide variety of biological classes to a very diverse student population, I have the experience to help you understand the biological sciences. My approach is to help students understand the biological process and how things work. My emphasis is on understanding, versus memorization. When you understand how things work, it's easier to appreciate the wonders of the biology sciences.

Dyslexia

I have three kids all of which have dyslexia as do I. I have worked with specialized institutions for dyslexia as well as working with high school special needs students (Douglas County schools). My education includes courses on learning disorders taught during my undergraduate training as a secondary education teacher. I know how to work with people with several different forms of Dyslexia having worked on both sides of the fence for many years. No your never free of this disorder you just learn how to live with it.

Physiology

Having a doctorate in physiology and a medical background has given me a broad perspective of how valuable our understanding of biological systems is to us. How the human body works and how it relates to our environment and how the environment affects us. I believe understanding is more important then memorization. When you understand how something works you can reason out the answers to many different questions. When you mercerize a fact you can lose its importance.
My teaching style emphasizes understanding over memorization. Understanding gives things meaning, memorization give only facts. Understanding biology, physiology, pathology all give you an idea of the role biology plays in the world today. As your instructor I will help you understand how different biological systems work I use the everyday world to help students understand how biological systems work. For example how a cone filling with water at a water park is like a neuron firing, a simple thing that makes understanding that much easier.
If you think my style of teaching would help you to understand, then I would be more than happy to help you learn the marvels of the biological sciences. Let me help you understand the world around us.
