My tutoring methods are differentiated to each student in order to meet the student's needs. I will scaffold the material as needed to get the student engaged, comfortable, and learning. My general agenda is to build a relationship within the first session as we establish targets and goals, then I can use various strategies as I get to know the student to present material in relevant ways so that the student can construct the new knowledge in the context of their existing knowledge, finally I use formative and summative assessments to evaluate progress and determine readiness to move on.
I have been teaching classical dance for 20+ years and I continue to direct a local ballet program in Littleton. I am a dynamic person confident in my communication skills in English and Spanish at various registers with all ages and types of students. Following my professional dance career, I moved to Colorado and attended Colorado Mesa University where I earned two bachelor's degrees in Spanish: Hispanic Literature/Interpretation and Translation, as well as a minor degree in dance. During undergrad in Grand Junction I taught private and group child and adult Spanish, and volunteered at the afterschool program for a dual immersion elementary school teaching bilingual dance. After graduation in May 2011, I moved to Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico to teach English. Since I have returned to Denver I have completed 2 semesters of the UC Denver Urban Community Teacher Education program in the School of Education and Human Development. I reside in Thornton and I teach dance in the evenings in Littleton. My tutoring methods are differentiated to each student in order to meet the student's needs. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a highly qualified master instructor of dance. I have 20+ years experience as a teacher and performer.
July 2011 to May 2012 I taught ESL at Cuauhnahuac Instituto in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. I have a specific approach to English Language acquisition that involves sounds and phonetics, intro to speaking, vocabulary, sentences and questions, prepositions, and so on with a repetition of the cycle. I also work with a workshop model. As the English Department Coordinator of the school, in Mexico, I was responsible for creating workshops for the students that incorporated relevant material for maximum engagement on specific learning targets.
I will help struggling readers by introducing graphic organizers and strategies for identifying main ideas and characters. I believe in think aloud context notes and visualization for retention and I will utilize students’ prior knowledge for high interest reading practice. Summarizing and synthesizing exercises form habits needed to extract information and produce efficient writing. Timed reading races can encourage high interest as well!
