I am a retired teacher, having taught 37 years in both public and private schools. Though I left the classroom, I have not left education. I have taught all levels of English including remedial, college prep. Advanced Placement and International baccalaureate. I also work with study and organizational skills, having taught such courses to athletes, college freshmen and parent groups. My Masters is in diagnostic and remedial teaching, which has prepared me for tailoring one-on-one instruction to meet a student's needs and skills. I also with permission from the parents create a dialogue with the student's teacher so that we can work in collaboration with the student. The advantage of working one-on-one is that often I can see a strength or weakness that might be missed by a teacher because of the classroom setting. I also greatly enjoy working with the student who is preparing for the ACT and/ or SAT in the areas of reading, English and writing. Even a two hour session can be enough to raise test scores in this area. I especially enjoy working with student athletes and consider myself one of their coaches. I am the academic coach. My personal love is writing and teaching writing. I also enjoy the challenge of working with students who have been identified as having ADD and/or Dyslexia. Finally, I enjoy helping students see their assignments not as a requirement, but as practice for turning them into life long learners.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's in diagnostic and remedial teaching from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. My training included study in dyslexia. As a reading teacher in three different school districts I worked with dyslexia students in these special classes as well as students in my regular classes. I served at a high school in Cincinnati as the intervention coordinator for six years as well as being in the same position at a high school Colorado for one year. My role was to identify and determine whether or not a student needed to be referred for further evaluation for dyslexia and to help the classroom teacher work with a particular student. My particular strength is in reading and writing and basic math skills. I am also well versed in knowing what legal rights a parent has to seek an IEP or 504 for accommodations.

Elementary (K-6th)

My main skill K-6 is in the area of reading. My Masters is in Diagnostic and Remedial Education from Miami University Oxford, Ohio. My emphasis is in reading instruction K-12. I have taught all subjects as a tutor grades 4-6 for elementary and as the reading coordinator for an American School in Sao Paulo Brazil. However, my expertise does begin with basic reading skills, i.e. sound patterns, sight words, etc. What I think I am especially skilled at as an educator is working on self-confidence as a learner.

Public Speaking

I have my undergrad degree in communications. I have both an Ohio and Colorado teaching certificate in speech. I was a speech/Forensic coach for 12 years coaching individual speaking events, Public Forum and Lincoln Douglas Debates. I have done presentations myself at numerous educational conferences including NCTE-The National Council of Teachers of English.

Study Skills

As a graduate student at Miami University Oxford, Ohio in 1976, my assistantship was the study skills workshop coordinator and presenter for college freshmen. As a teacher at Escola Graduda, an American Community School in Sao Paulo, Brazil 1977-79, I designed a middle school study skills program to be conducted by the content area teachers during a daily study time. At Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, I conducted study skills workshops for the football and baseball team, the freshmen teacher team leaders, and the parents of incoming freshmen. Once moving to Colorado, I continued my study skills work as a reading specialist and English teacher. I currently specialize in study skills instruction especially with middle school students with another tutoring organization.
