I've been studying English for over two decades and am passionate about helping others to learn it! I'm certified to teach English as a Second Language, and I've taught in Denver Public Schools. My writing has been published in Westword and the Denver Post, and I love teaching. My own education was spent in the Denver Public Schools, CU Boulder, and CU Denver.

My most rewarding teaching experiences so far have been in English, Art, special education, and English as a Second Language. I really enjoy helping students achieve proficiency in language, because it opens so many doors for them to facilitate their own education in unlimited areas. Nothing beats seeing a student "get it" as the subject matter clicks in place within their mind, and their eyes light up with understanding.

Learning methods are as diverse as people, and I try to get students as involved as possible in our topic by helping them to participate and interact with the material: conversations, not lectures. I try to get them writing and speaking, in addition to reading and listening.
English is the subject I've studied and taught most often, but I'm also well-versed in art, ecology, music, and others.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I've taught drawing and art as a substitute/guest teacher within the Denver Public Schools. I took courses on art in college at the University of Colorado, I've created artwork for friends' company logos, and more importantly, I've worked at a local "art garage" that teaches extra-curricular art to neighborhood kids.
My approach is hands-on: art teachers and students view different techniques of drawing together, discuss them together, and then experiment together to find desired outcomes. I've used this approach to teach pencil sketching, acrylic painting, stencil-cutting and spray painting, and even collaging or sculpting.
Drawing or creating art is like bicycle riding: someone can explain it to you for hours, but the lesson is learned by the experience of you doing it yourself, with good supervision.
