Hello folks. My name is Cathrine, however, most people call me Cat. I am in my last year working towards a major in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. At this time I have a GPA of 3.8. Further, a chemistry major requires a fair amount of calculus work, as well as, analytical and mathematical understanding. Therefore, I can tutor chemistry, biology, algebra and calculus classes.

During my time in school, I have fallen in love with most every subject I have studied. I have a love of learning. Further, I have always had a natural talent for expressiveness. In my teaching/tutoring I use expressive language in my explanations, draw out examples, and have 3-D simple molecules that we can play with to visualize structure. I can help with studying techniques, memory aids, and time management. Further, I help students to understand their resources. For example, the back of the book typically has a plethora of information.

Last, but certainly not least, I am patient, understanding, competent, knowledgeable, and I have a good sense of humor. I do my best to make the learning process fun and enjoyable!

Algebra 1

When I was in high school I struggled with Algebra, so I had to start from the beginning in college. I had a few great teachers and now it is a strength that I depend heavily on. I feel that because I struggled in high school I have an insight into where students get stuck and I use that to help others.

Algebra 2

When I was younger I struggled with math, so I had to start from the beginning in college. I had a few great teachers and now it is a strength that I depend heavily on. With some study behavior tips, focus on mathematical vocabulary and paying attention to what the question is asking for I feel confident I can help anyone who wants to learn. I feel that because I struggled in math I have an insight into where students get stuck and I use that to help others.

Anatomy

I have taken and passed with A's both college level Anatomy & Physiology I and II. Further, I had a trade degree that focused primarily on anatomy and physiology. I have tutored college level students in anatomy for the past year. I find that it is an exercise in study habits, memorization and visualization.

Biology

I have taken and passed with A's both college level General Biology I and II. I have tutored college level students in Biology concepts for the past year. I find that it is an exercise in study habits, memorization and visualization. Biology is a fun class to tutor to watch students awaken to the biological workings of the world around them.

Calculus

I struggled with math as a child and young adult. Therefore, I was surprised by my absolute love of calculus. It is a challenging endeavor to master calculus. However, it accurately depicts the world around us in a fluid and dynamic way. I achieved high grades in all three of the calculus classes I have taken. I also received a high grade in the differential equations course, which relies heavily on all the calculus, algebra, and trigonometry courses one may have taken. Due to my initial struggles with mathematics and algebra, I had to learn how to study mathematical sciences. It felt as though I had to learn how to learn. Once I had that mastered, mathematics became a strength I rely heavily on in classes, at work, and on a day-to-day basis.

Chemistry

I have taken General Chemistry I and II and passed with A's. I had a magnificent teacher who built a strong foundation in general chemistry concepts that I still use in my upper division college chemistry classes. I use drawings, physical models, online pictures and dynamic examples to help explain the abstract ideas that general Chemistry is dependent on. Chemistry is further very dependent on Algebraic ideas and modeling, which is a particular strength of mine.

Elementary Math

When I was younger I struggled with math, so I had to start from the beginning in college. I had a few great teachers and now it is a strength that I depend heavily on. With some study behavior tips, focus on mathematical vocabulary and paying attention to what the question is asking for I feel confident I can help anyone who wants to learn. I feel that because I struggled in math I have an insight into where students get stuck and I use that to help others.

English

I love to read and write. I love books and I love the stories they tell. I love the written word as a means of communication. I enjoy crafting differing types of essays, poetry, scientific reports, journal entries, stories, and basically anything that employs the use of the English language in a descriptive or communicative way. Further, I use my high degree of reading comprehension, as well as, an intuitive/ creative approach to the written aspect of English as a tool to help me everyday in college and to help students I tutor in college.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken Organic Chemistry I and lab, for which I passed the first lecture with a high B and the lab with an A. As well as, Organic Chemistry II and lab, for which I passed the lecture with an A and the lab with a high B. The professor for O. Chem, to this day, remains one of my absolute favorite professors of all time. Further, the professor for the Organic Lecture became my mentor in a research project regarding the energy transmission of electrons that change from higher to lower molecular orbitals to emit light. This project involved the production of several 3,6-disubstituted 1,2,4,5-tetrazine molecules involving a Diels-Alder reaction. Additionally, I have been working on a research project to produce biodiesel that involves some Organic and Biochemistry understanding.

Physical Science

Having an understanding of the physical world is a requirement when pursuing a degree with a chemistry major and a biology minor. I have taken many chemistry and biology classes, as well as, a few physics classes in my pursuit of a degree. I have tutored biology, anatomy and chemistry related concepts for over a year. Physical sciences are fun classes to tutor because the concepts are directly related to the world around us.

Prealgebra

When I was in high school I struggled with Algebra, so I had to start from the beginning with pre-pre algebra in college. I had a few great teachers and now it is a strength that I depend heavily on. I feel that because I struggled in high school I have an insight into where students get stuck and I use that to help others. I use examples, the internet, pictures and models to help explain word problems and questions.

Precalculus

When I was in high school I struggled with Algebra and Trigonometry, so I had to start from the beginning in college. I had a few great teachers and now it is a strength that I depend heavily on. With some study behavior tips, focus on mathematical vocabulary and paying attention to what the question is asking for I feel confident I can help anyone who want to learn. I feel that because I struggled in high school I have an insight into where students get stuck and I use that to help others.

Reading

I love to read. I love books and I love the stories they tell. I love the written word as a means of communication. I use my high degree of reading comprehension as a tool to help me everyday in college and to help students I tutor in college.

Education

Metropolitan State University of Denver (Chemistry)

Very effective methodology! I need a tutor for tough classes like chemistry because I am a slow learner, and I need another teacher to reiterate important topics from the class. While it would be easy to just be told all of the answers by Cat, she takes an excellent approach, which makes me walk away from the tutoring session feeling 10x more confident about the material. She asks questions in response to my questions to get ...
