My name is Daniel. I'm 26 years old, and I spent the last four years teaching English to middle and high school students in China. I am TOEFL certified, and received my bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis. I scored an 800 on the SAT English section (it was only one section when I was in high school) and a 36 on the ACT reading section. I am not a rigid or strict tutor: I believe a lighter touch is better when working on English skills. I work with students to identify the problems they are having, and together the student and I address any problems by discussing them clearly and simply. Since most students who are being tutored are at least a little nervous about the subject in question, I remain relaxed and friendly in order to keep them calm and doing their best. My teaching style is a mix of conversation and quiz: the student and I discuss the issue at hand, then I quiz them to make sure they understood. I find that this slightly more informal style works very well for helping students with reading and writing problems because it minimizes the anxiety a student feels. I'm an easygoing person, I like to joke with the students; anything to make them more relaxed and therefore more receptive to new ideas or approaches. Although most of my tutoring experience is ESL in China, I have a significant experience in the American educational system; I know how to get high scores on the standardized English tests, and I have expertise writing essays at the high school and college level. If you want to improve your reading, writing, or even just critical thinking skills, I'm your man!
