In my tutoring I incorporate reading achievement by building interest and motivation by talking, reading and writing together. These activities allow me to learn about the student's interests and encourages expression of ideas. I encourage organization of ideas and validate the student's ideas. This increases fluency and comprehension and builds vocabulary. By working with books or writing, we build phonics skills and provide practice in revision and editing. We make connections by reviewing and reading which also allows time for practice. We may play word games, practice spelling words that sound alike but are spelled differently and/or have the student write a story of their choosing. When selecting a book, or story, the age of the student is considered as well as the length and number of words on a page. These items may be from a library, the student's favorite piece of reading or from the tutor's selection. Depending on the age of the student, there are many varied activities that can be considered.
