Interested in numbers and analysis? Looking for the words to express yourself in writing? I've had 15 years of experience teaching undergraduates and graduates these tools. Statistics was my "cognate" in my Ph.D program though my major area of focus was Human Communication Studies. Before completing a Ph.D, though, I worked in corporate situations where I was the senior technical writer, communication specialist, marketing coordinate for high tech, translation project manager, government program coordinator, and even a cultural attachee to a VP from Mercedes Benz. So my real world experience plus years in the classroom help me create learning experiences with actual applications. Many of my students have gone on to become lawyers with excellent writing skills. Some have embraced statistics in healthcare positions -- even though they were number-phobic when I met them for the first time!
I also have skills in working with dyslexic students both in middle school and in higher education. My son is dyslexic and just graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, hurray! I have adapted different methods to help these students either using technology or multisensory approaches. I have raised a dyslexic son who is now 40 years old. While he was growing up, I worked in a special ed classroom in junior high where dyslexic students were taught reading and writing. I have also identified dyslexic students in higher education classrooms, and worked with them as they completed their assignments. I have tutored in reading where some of the students were dyslexic, using whole language methods as well as Slingerland multi-sensory methods.
I have course work in rhetorical logic and fallacies as well as number theory and its application to logical premises and meanings. I have taught logic in undergraduate courses in communication as it relates to ethics, public speaking, and rhetoric. Additionally, I have course work in introductory philosophy, which covers logic in this disciplinary context.
I've helped students develop a passion for reading over the years of teaching. Sometimes the passion instills motivation and then comprehension follows along behind. Reading is a life-saving skill and a life-changing skill. My background includes individual tutoring of elementary education students in reading through a private school, teaching dyslexic students reading and writing in middle school, and teaching communication skills in higher education.
I'm skilled at SPSS analysis for descriptives and inferential statistics that focus on correlational/regression analyses. I've also done some work on data mining (looking for meaning in data that is gathered). As well, I can help you with t-tests, ANOVA, MANOVA, and factor analysis. If you have any need for psychometric methods in developing measures and scales, I've done this and would be glad to help you.
