I have spent the last 13 years as an English Composition and Literature instructor at the community college level. During that time, I have also worked as a one-on-one tutor is Writing Centers at the three colleges where I have taught. I especially enjoy working with students face-to-face and helping them improve their writing. I am a very patient and kind tutor, but also a strict taskmaster who will work with the student to identify areas for improvement. Typically, my first priority when looking at a student essay or other piece of writing is to identify higher order concerns, meaning organization and content, and how these can be tightened up. Secondarily, we will focus on lower order areas, like grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. I'm also very familiar with documentation of sources in research essays. Of course, it is up to the student to inform me as to what the main focus of our session will be. My approach to tutoring is to get the student as involved in revision as possible, so that each session is a learning experience in which he or she improves and gains more confidence as a writer.

My educational background includes a B.A. in English, with a specialty in Creative Writing, and a Masters and Ph.D. in Folklore & Mythology from UCLA, with a specialty in Medieval Celtic Literature and Languages. So, I am well-versed in all kinds of writing, from the creative to the academic. My academic resume includes five articles published in a variety of prestigious scholarly journals in North America and Europe.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taught English Composition and Literature courses at three different Denver-area community colleges for the past eleven years. Presently, as an adjunct instructor, I teach ENG 121 (Basic Composition), ENG 122 (Research Paper), and Introduction to Literature at Front Range Community College in Westminster. I also have many years of experience tutoring students in Writing Centers at all three of the colleges where I have worked. Additionally, I am the Literature specialist for Regis University's Online Irish Studies Program, which features courses in Irish History, Literature, and Archaeology. My educational background includes a B.A. in English, minor in German, from Metropolitan State College of Denver, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval Celtic Literature and Languages from the Folklore & Mythology Program at UCLA. I have four published articles in academic journals in Celtic Studies and Folklore, and am presently working on a book in this same field.

Writing

In addition to completing a well-received Ph.D. dissertation on a topic in Medieval Celtic Literature, I am a published author with five academic articles to my credit. These articles appear in a variety of prestigious peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Medieval Literature, Celtic Studies, and Folklore and Mythology. I have also taught Composition courses, including ENG 122, a research essay course, for 13 years at three different community colleges in the Denver area.
