My name is Melissa. I have been teaching for 6 years and have spent that time in elementary special education! My experience includes students with emotional/behavioral disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, and those in need of specific academic interventions to catch up via the RtI process. I thrive off of pinpointing the root cause of an academic issue and assisting students as they find success.
I also have passions in the areas of dance (specifically ballet), science (I was a biology minor in college), and elementary education as a whole! I love spending time with kids and seeing how much they grow. My patience and enthusiasm is pivotal when working with struggling students.
When tutoring I follow the same methods I do when I am teaching. I begin with assessments to identify the root cause of a problem and develop lessons, interventions, and practice activities from there. This includes modeling, playing games, any necessary visual/tactile/kinesthetic supports, and practice, practice, practice! I also love to give suggestions to families to help their kids when no teacher is around!
I have a Master's degree in Urban Education, a Bachelor's degree in psychology, and I am currently taking classes in the linguistically diverse education field. My passion for learning is ongoing, and I hope to instill this is the students I work with! I worked in New York City for five years and moved to Colorado last year. I currently work in the Aurora school district. I am considered highly qualified in special education and elementary education in both New York and Colorado.
I am an excellent resource to help your student find success! I look forward to providing as much tutoring help as I can!
