Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I have done some sort of desktop publishing for the last fifteen years. I am proficient in Word, WordPerfect and Adobe. I have been a freelance writer, an editor for small local publications and have been published by various magazines over a dozen times.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been in school for the last two and a half years (with over 70 credits) studying to become a teacher. I have worked as director of writing groups for elementary girls and I am currently employed as a teacher's assistant.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using Microsoft Windows for over 15 years. I own a small online business which requires a lot of computer work. I also have received additional training in Windows through a teaching and technology class that I completed last year.

Phonics

I have worked with helping children learn to read both as a homeschooling mother and as an educational assistant in the reading resource room at an elementary school in Eugene, Oregon. Working in groups of 2 - 6, I facilitated phonics lessons for students in K - 5th grade. I have successfully completed a course entitled: Foundations of Education and Language Strategies. This course provided me with additional skills needed when working with students as they learn to read.

Reading

My expertise in reading comes from my own passion for reading, teaching my own two children to read before they entered school and college courses such as Foundations of Education and Language Arts Strategies, Introduction to Phonetics, and numerous literature and writing classes.

Study Skills

As a non-traditional student myself, I had to learn how to balance all facets of my life; school, parenting, marriage, and work. I discovered the benefits of knowing about learning styles and types of learning. I also learned a lot about procrastination and how to avoid the traps like, "I have to clean my desk first..." I can help students discover their own learning style, homework and study pitfalls, and customize a homework/study schedule that will work for them.

Writing

I have been a writer for over thirty years. In addition to being a published poet and freelance journalist, I was editor of my own newspaper for over three years. I have also been the director of a girl's writing group for several years.
