I am an environmental engineer with a passion for math and education. I would like to use these passions to help students achieve their goals and improve their math skills. I have a couple of unique experiences that I believe would help me provide effective tutoring services. I am a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from Mali, West Africa. During my service, I taught a couple of classes at the local middle school including substituting for the math teacher on occasion. Teaching math to a class of 90 seventh grade students while using a foreign language was challenging and fulfilling work. From this work, I definitely learned the value of patience and flexibility.
In high school, I also worked as a geometry tutor. My teacher had recommended my services to the parents of another student, and with my help, the student went from failing to passing the class by the end of the year. Additionally, in high school, I gained experience tutoring elementary school students as I volunteered to help them study for their Standards of Learning test. The after school program was fun and effective.
As a math tutor, I believe practice makes perfect. I will go the extra mile to find new problems for students to complete, and can make myself available for any and all homework questions. I also recognize from my experiences, the importance of flexibility and that students learn in different ways. I will work to understand how the student learns best and employ the most effective tutoring techniques that match his or her learning style.
Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to working with you!
