My tutoring experiences have been varied. I have tutored for several organizations around Denver and also for myself.
My last experience with an organization was with a private center. I worked for two going on three years for them. They had a specific program they wanted you to use. and a wonderful selection of materials. I worked with one first grader for about a year on Reading and Printing. We worked on Phonics and reading aloud. I then had him write two sentences about what he read. I enjoyed my experience here.
I tutored a young man in Middle School. He was Special Ed. He read Kindergarten books. I used “Dr Jean’s” Phonics CD of songs and also Starfall on the computer. He also enjoyed measuring things like our motor home and the dining room table.

I tutored for a child in Littleton for several years. She had a Reading and Writing program. She used Linda-Mood Bell Phonics program which consists of pictures of tongue, mouth, teeth etc to show children how to pronounce sounds and words. Some schools were using it at that time but most have since changed to other programs.
Rosalie moved on to California and her partner continued tutoring there.
My methods consist of finding at what level the student is reading. My goals are: to use Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Fluency to improve a student’s reading. I am also interested in assisting stimulating a student’s learning and making it fun and not a drag. So encouraging them and building their self esteem are also important..
My goal for students in grades 4-6 again is to find out the student’s Reading level. Do they need a review of Phonics? Are they reading word by word or in groups of words? I use techniques for helping them with Reading Comprehension. Short quizzes after I ;have covered something help me to know if they learned that particular item.
I also motivate students by having them earn stickers. A graph or chart showing the student’s progress can help the student see how he or she is doing.
In Math, for students in grades 4-6, I have them work on multiplication and division facts I also find out what they are doing in school and proceed from there. Students at this age often need help on long division, fractions decimals, and percents.
In Language, we work on grammar, word usage, parts of speech, types of sentences and punctuation. i also find out what goes on at school.
Writing needs to be addressed sometimes. Writing graphics help. I also work on main ideas and details. Using transitional words can improve a student’s writing.
For Middle Schoolers it’s much more detailed and intense. Students need to advance their skills as things s are getting more difficult as they prepare for High School.
These are the methods I use as a tutor to improve student learning and bring them up to grade level. I know we want these students to be able to succeed in life.
