My name is Michael H., and I have been working to help students get access to an excellent education for more than five years. I began my career in education as a high school mathematics teacher for two years in the Teach for American program in Detroit. During my time in Michigan, I have taught every subject of high school mathematics, and I have also tutored students in physics, history, social students, and Spanish (I am fluent). During my third year in Detroit, I became a specialized ACT teacher - I have a great deal of experience with every aspect of the exam, and proven track record of success.

In Denver, I am the Academic Affairs Director for an education non-profit. As part of my work, I led an ACT program that led to more than three points of average increase per student, with a median increase of four points. My students always leave a study session with a solid understanding of the material, and we always have a good time while we learn.

In study sessions, I am an interested and engaging coach. I will make sure that we achieve a great deal in our sessions, and that you leave with a deep and lasting understanding of the material. Most importantly, I will help you truly appreciate and enjoy what you are studying! I am flexible about where and when we meet, and I can provide a great deal of my own study materials to help!

ACT English

The ACT test is a difficult test for anyone who does not understand the structure and unique characteristics of each section. Within the English, Math, Reading, and Science portions there are numerous rules, strategies, and tricks that can help a student become more confident and better able to achieve high scores. I have a great deal of experience helping students seeing dramatic improvement on this test, and I would love to share my knowledge and resources with you!

ACT Math

I have taught ACT classes before, and have a wealth of experience and resources that will help you improve! We can create a structured study plan to help you see positive results in whatever academic area you want to focus on.

Algebra 1

Learning how to use abstract reasoning, modeling concepts with mathematics, and persevering in the face of difficulties are all important skills which you will need to excel in algebra. I will teach you to become a patient problem solver, and help you be confident in your abilities as you tackle tough math problems. We will work to understand the 'why' behind each idea, and make sure that you are prepared to apply your knowledge in future courses and exams.

Algebra 2

In order to succeed in algebra two, students need to have a broad mathematical perspective. I will ensure that you can master individual skills while learning to see the larger themes that connect them. My goal will be to ensure that you can call on a solid conceptional foundation to justify every step you take to solve a problem.

I have had a great deal of experience helping students study for and pass standardized tests like the GED, SAT, and ACT. In addition to broad content knowledge, I know a variety of tricks and strategies that can help make you a smarter, more efficient test taker.

Geometry is the study of logic, as much as it is a study of shapes. I will help you learn to speak the language of geometry, and understand how to use logic to justify your claims. These skills will certainly allow you to be successful, but they also extend for beyond the classroom. They give you the analytic thinking skills to be a confident problem solver.

In order to be successful in high school, math students need to learn to think about mathematical concepts in the right way. This is never more critical than in pre-algebra. I will help you understand and justify every idea that you study, and make sure that you aren't just doing some 'trick' without knowing why. Your knowledge of pre-algebra will be deeper and longer lasting as a result.

This is a course which synthesizes concepts of geometry and algebra, and applies them to graphing and predicting real world concepts. I will help you understand how to use mathematics as a tool to describe the world around you, and make sure that you have a clear sense of why these ideas are important. I have taught this subject twice in high school, and I know how to make it engaging, relevant, and fun.

When I was a young student, my father instilled in me a lifelong love of reading. I see it as the ultimate key to success in school, and value it as one of the best ways to improve your own life. As a college student majoring in History and International Politics I learned the skill of active reading, and practiced finding meaning, analyzing arguments, and evaluating style. I have helped many students learn the mechanics of being a smart reader, and also helped them come to love reading for its own sake.

SAT Math

I have taught SAT classes before, and have a wealth of experience and resources that will help you improve! We can create a structured study plan to help you see positive results in whatever academic area you want to focus on.

Throughout college, I studied Spanish here in the United States. As I came to enjoy learning the mechanics of Spanish grammar, I knew I wanted to explore the language further. That is why I chose to spend half a year living in southern Spain. Today, I am a fluent Spanish speaker, and I love helping people come to understand and appreciate this subject. I have a great deal of teaching Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills to students of all ages.

This is often the most challenging subject that high school students encounter in mathematics - to succeed, you really need to be able to 'see' each idea abstractly. I have taught this subject three times, and have numerous strategies to make sure that you understand and can explain each concept we study.

World History

I have a great deal of experience as a history student and tutor, and I know what it takes to be successful at the High School and College levels. I will teach you the proper reading skills and study habits to ensure that you are able to find key information from a given historical text (or textbook), and develop a narrative to understand the information in context. I am a very enthusiastic student of history, and I know how to make this an engaging and fun topic!
