I have a Ph.D. and near-native skills in Spanish. Over 25 years, I have worked with students from grade-school age to senior citizens. I love passing on my knowledge of the Spanish language, and I also enjoy helping new immigrants master English. Professionally, I have taught all levels of Spanish language and Latin American literature as well as writing courses at liberal arts colleges and major universities in the Midwest and here in Colorado. I also taught Spanish and ACT Prep for two years at the high school level. In addition, I tutored English language learners as a contractor for a school district. While in graduate school, I had a tutoring and translation business and prepared students to pass university graduation proficiency exams in Spanish. I also taught group Spanish classes at worksites and thoroughly enjoyed that environment as well. As a volunteer, I worked with advanced Spanish reading groups at a Spanish immersion grade school for two years.
Whatever the age or level of my student, she/he will have fun while learning. I practice cutting-edge communicative pedagogy, meaning that I emphasize real-life conversation skills. My first objective is in lowering the "affective filter," so that the student feels less fear and embarrassment about experimenting with new language skills. A lot of laughter and fun activities help achieve this goal.
