After completing my undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University, I spent a year in Boston, serving as a City Year corps member. As a corps member, I served approximately 2,000 hours as a tutor, mentor, and role model to under-served 6th grade students in a Boston public school. During my time with City Year I followed a cohort of 28 students to all four of their classes (English, Math, Social Studies, and Science) to provide in-class support for teachers as well as tutoring in push-in and pull-out sessions. Additionally, I led a small group, after-school academic advisory for struggling students, where they could receive homework help and feedback on report cards. Many of the students with whom I worked with during these sessions improved their grades from ‘D’s and ‘C’s to ‘A’s and ‘B’s. As well as providing academic support, I mentored students with behavioral issues and discussed importance of self-awareness, self-management, and responsibility. Since moving out to Denver, I have tutored high school students in a variety of math and science classes.
