Math/Science Tutor with Master's of Science in Engineering

Hi! My name is Jon C.

Two of my greatest passions in life are wed in tutoring:
1. My love for math and science, and
2. The great joy that comes from helping others understand difficult material.

I am a Denver, CO area professional who has a Bachelors of Science in Engineering Physics and a thesis based Masters of Science in Engineering, both from the Colorado School of Mines. I am well-qualified to teach all high school levels and many college level courses.

My graduate coursework leaned heavily towards numerical simulation and modeling. My thesis included some code development in FORTRAN.

Whether you or your child is in middle school, high school or college I want to help.

I do not teach the rote memorization of methods: I shoot for student understanding of the material. By hook or by crook, I work for student comprehension and increased performance. I gauge the effectiveness of my work by the increased student comprehension and mastery of the material.

Chemistry

I took my first chemistry class as a sophomore in high school. I loved that general chemistry class! It was my first introduction to quantitative reasoning in the sciences. It was a revelation to me that one could use simple arithmetic ratios to make predictions about the quantity of products from chemical reactions. Physics

My undergraduate degree was physics. I pursued physics for two reasons:

1. I found it interesting and challenging, and
2. I have a desire to understand how things work from a basic level.

I still have a love for physics and this enthusiasm spills over when helping somebody with understanding it.

Bible Studies

I have read and studied the Bible consistently over the past 12 years. I also was a youth group leader for a year from 2007-2008. I have preached at two nursing homes over the course of the past year.

Differential Equations

I have taken two math classes specific to differential equations: Ordinary Differential Equations and Partial Differential Equations. I have also taken one undergraduate level and one graduate level Engineering Math courses that touched on Differential Equations.

Fortran

I used FORTRAN 95 extensively during my thesis work. My advisor's geotechnical excavation program was written in this. I modified this preexisting program for the purposes of my research.

Linear Algebra

I have taken an undergraduate linear algebra course. Upon this foundation I have added much physical application: eigenvalue problems in mechanical stability problems, multi-modal vibratory theory, the use of linear algebra constructs in the Finite Element Method, the construction of stiffness matrices in non-isotropic materials, and the application of linear algebra to describe the mechanical behavior of the very small in quantum mechanics.

MATLAB

Through the course of my graduate studies, I coded over 5000 lines in MATLAB. The bulk of this programming was in the context of two graduate level courses: Soil Dynamics and Advanced Engineering Analysis, where I coded mathematical frameworks and homework, respectively. I also wrote a simple 1-Dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM) code in MATLAB for a graduate level DEM class. Civil Engineering

I graduated with a Master's of Science degree with a specialty in Civil Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in spring of 2012. I also successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam for Civils.

Tax Preparation

I worked for H&R Block as a first year tax preparer for the Spring 2010 (Tax Year 2009) season. I passed the required H&R Block multi-week tax course and was hired on.

I was quite successful in this position in that I was well-liked by my colleagues and had a 100% customer satisfaction marks.

I went to graduate school in Fall 2010 and graduated in May 2012. Due to the exigencies of school and family life, I was not able to work the last two tax seasons.

My daughter was struggling with AP statistics and it was great that he had her work problems while he was there, rather than explaining the mechanics and leaving her to try using the concepts later.
