I taught Language Arts for grades 9-12 for five years. I have also worked with younger students as a reading tutor. I have a masters degree in Education.
I have extensive experience tutoring young students in reading. I use a combination of phonics and sight word memorization to maximize reading growth. Since there are so many words in the English language that do not follow the rules, memorization of high frequency words is necessary. Students need to enjoy what they are reading and as they begin "reading" favorite books that may be above their level (that is to say, I read with them and they begin to memorize the words in the book) they begin to see how letters work together to represent sounds.
