I have been a tutor for the majority of my life. While I was in school, I was a member of the National Honor Society and was assigned as a math tutors because me and only a few other people were very skilled with math. I have the ability to tutor in English as well but prefer Math because I absolutely enjoy the subject.
When I joined College, I became a paid tutor and have tutored for two families who appreciate my experience. I worked for the Academic Resource Center at the University of Saint Mary which is responsible for tutoring any students that are having difficulty with a course.
I believe that the student can do the work but has difficulty understanding the teacher's teaching strategy. What I try to do is ask the student to tell me what they are doing and go through and explain where they went wrong so I am not reteaching them information they already knew. I have a very easy going personality and will spend as much time on a problem as the student needs. I understand that Math can be difficult when it is not understood and have learned that teaching the same way to all students is not productive because every person has a different way of learning. If the student is catching on quickly, I will not go step by step, but continue until the student stops me. I am willing to go back and repeat something that I said if the student stops and asks me to. I can easily go step by step teaching and I try not to be all business when I teach because most people who need a tutor in the subject already dislike the subject and I do not want to bore them any further. I enjoy learning the subjects and try to share that enjoyment with the students I tutor.
