Algebra 1
Understanding Algebra is essential to moving on to all higher levels of math including geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. It is the basic math needed to obtain a proper understanding of all higher level math.
Of the three children I have, one is in college and one is in high school. So, as a teacher and a parent, I have substantial experience in teaching all levels of math, including Algebra. Please contact me through Wyzant and let me help you grow your child's math understanding and future.
ASVAB
My father was a career military pilot. He had a 20 year career in the Air Force flying C-130s. While I was unable to enter military service myself, I developed a love for the the military and the people who serve our great nation because of the experiences of my father. I am a middle school math teacher but I am passionate about helping people in all areas of education, especially those who are willing to serve our country. Successfully completing this test is an important step in having a rewarding military career, and I am here to assist anyone who feels they need some extra guidance in passing the ASVAB.
Elementary (K-6th)
While the majority of my career has been at the middle school level, I spent my first six years teaching all core subjects in fourth and fifth grades, and I am certified in elementary education. I have always enjoyed working with students in these grades and switched to middle school because math was my real passion.
While I may teach math as a career, I also enjoy teaching other subjects to elementary students. If you are interested in having a qualified teacher work with your child, please contact me to set up a time to discuss your child's needs.
Elementary Math
My career in education began at the elementary level. I taught 4th and 5th grades for the first six years of my career. I enjoyed teaching those grade levels, but I found that the math part of the day was always the most enjoyable for me. This is the reason I decided to begin teaching in middle school.
Math at the elementary levels creates a structured foundation and organizes the mathematical logic within a child's brain that allows for better retention, analysis, and evaluation of the higher level, more abstract concepts learned at the high school and college levels. I can help you and your child build this foundation for the future.
GED
While I have taught in the middle and elementary grades for 16 years, I have also taught high school students in a credit recovery program. This program was taught at night to high school students who had to catch up on credit needed to graduate and to adults.
Many of the adult students were working on their GED and attended the classes to gain a better understanding of the math needed to obtain their GED. I would work with the students in class as well as before and after class to make sure they were ready to pass the test. Please contact me if you need assistance with the math portion of the GED. I look forward to working with you.
Geometry
Geometry is the 'Visual" math. Most students who consider themselves visual learners usually do well at geometry. Those who are not visual learners may need more help with this part of math. Geometry is an opportunity to show how art has a science to it and how math can be artistic.
Spatial references, angles, volume, area and circular measurements are vital parts of painting, sculpture, and math. Artistic as well as mathematical students can enjoy learning geometry. I look forward to working with your son or daughter on the "artistic" area of math.
Prealgebra
Algebra is the essential math needed to move on to all higher levels of math including geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The arithmetic, or prealgebra, your child learns in the elementary grades is the basic math needed to obtain a proper understanding of Algebra. A strong understanding of prealgebra creates the essential, solid foundation that will take your child to any level of math he or she will wish to obtain.
I have three children of my own. One is in college, one is in high school, and the youngest one is the primary grades. So, as a teacher and a parent, I have substantial experience in teaching at the younger grades. Please contact me through Wyzant and let me help you grow your child's math understanding and future.
SAT Math
Much of the SAT Test is made up of the mid-level to upper-level math. These are the areas of math that I teach and have taught for many years. I can help you get through the SATs, and I enjoy helping people achieve their educational goals, especially when it means helping them get into college.
Study Skills
As a high school student, I lacked competent study skills. I understand the frustration this can cause. Study skills are essential to life-long learning because they create a sense of organization. It involves physical and mental organization as well as a plan to reach your academic goals.
As a certified math teacher, I know that if a student is organized he or she will have jumped one of the biggest hurdles in learning: keeping your thoughts together. I help students who have difficulty getting organized, and I look forward to doing this for your child.
