As a senior at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana I am enjoying my last semester here as a 2nd grade student teacher. Saint Mary's gave me the wonderful opportunity to be teaching in the elementary classroom (Kindergarten, 2nd, and 6th grade) for 200+ before student teaching even began. I have chosen to be a teacher because I love children, I think they are a blessing and a wonderful gift to be around.
Through the opportunities I have been given, as a pre-service teacher at Saint Mary’s College, I have not only been able to confirm my passion for teaching but to see the variety of circumstances from which each child comes. It is evident that some students are not given an equal chance at being the best they can be in school as a result of their disadvantaged home life and upbringing. I desire to give these students a fair and equal opportunity to learn to their fullest potential, despite what disadvantages they may experience inside or outside of school. I view my teaching career as a chance to build meaningful relationships with students, providing them with an opportunity not only to learn but to find their true selves. I am eager to be the positive person in the students’ life whose goal for them is not simply to reach the state’s standards but to educate them about life, fostering the self-confidence and ability they need to reach their potential.
