Baseball Umpire & Coach, Historian and Musicologist

Dear Potential Students,

This international "Jack of All Trades" who loves to teach, listen patiently, and share, hopes this finds you well!

My interests, experience, and expertise range from German language to architecture and conducting, WWII to the Cold War and Current Affairs, foreign language (I lived and worked in Germany for 52 years), sports officiating to tour guiding and public speaking, as well as life coaching and development of study skills. We can follow up academic tutoring with shooting hoops or developing baseball and softball skills for young athletes. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds.

The individualized approach I take to tutoring is based upon an integration of academic learning and real-life experience all over the world. One of my favorite things about tutoring, however, is that I also have the chance to learn from you as we work through your studies together. My past tutoring and teaching experience include teaching music courses as the former Berlin Schiller College, guest lecturing at the University of Chicago, teaching German history at the U.S. Army School of Standards, and serving as the Assistant Director of the Opera Workshop at the University of Utah.

Conversational German is my specialty for beginners to advanced students. Whether we chat about places in Germany (I have lived and worked in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin, and also worked in Leipzig), Cold War history or current affairs, I would enjoy helping you to improve your German language skills while drawing upon 52 years of experience in Germany.

Music History

My musical background began during early childhood studying piano and concertizing extensively during high school and college. In college, I also studied voice, music history and conducting, with the goal of becoming an opera conductor. While in college I was the Assistant Director of the opera workshop, student conductor of the university chorus and the a cappella choir. Baseball

I have always been an active person who began playing sports during childhood and began baseball umpiring at the age of 14. I played and competed in baseball, softball, basketball and track and field in high school and college, coached softball in high school, and Little League baseball while living and working in Germany. ESL/ESOL

My mother was Russian and we spoke Russian at home until I was about 12. Later, because of my work in Germany, I took a refresher course but am no longer fluent in the language and can still understand enough to be of practical assistance to Russian speakers wishing to improve both their conversational and written English.

Softball

I coached softball in high school and college and also within the Youth Activities program while in Germany. I am also a certified umpire.

My goal is work with developing athletes one-on-one, motivate them, help them overcome their weaknesses and guide them in polishing their skills, in order to advance to a higher level.
