Every child is gifted and exceptional and deserves to feel confident at school.

I am passionate about being a part of children finding those gifts, skills, talents, abilities and confidence.

Sessions are focused on your child experiencing success by exploring strategies of organizing, learning, and remembering, which results in your child discovering meaningful and useful ways to learn.

My approach is using varied, proven, and engaging strategies and activities, including, but not limited to material your child chooses, Brain Gym activities, Balance-Auditory-Visual exercises, SOAR study skills, Notebooking, reader's and writer's notebooks, reader's theater, the use of questions to allow your child to find his or her personal process and system of learning; creating a unique and individualized program with your child, changing and growing as we work together.

I have a masters degree and 25 years of experience working with children in various capacities; my love of reading and writing has guided me to specializing in these areas of learning as a tutor and study skills coach.
I believe in clear focus but also having lots of fun with children; knowing that learning erupts within movement and the creative process. Learning is experiential.

My resume and references are available upon request.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

Both of my degrees from college were in Speech Pathology, which means I was trained to be a speech therapist. I learned about the development of speech sounds and how sounds are blended together to make words.

Over the years, as I've worked with children learning to read, I've found some fun ways to work on learning the sounds each letter makes and how to put the sounds together to make words. Once you learn these two parts of reading, then you can start having lots of fun reading whole books rather than just working to read one word at a time.

Reading is the most fun and wonderful part of school, and I can help get the phonics part down!

Study Skills

All people have strategies to remember things, although most people probably couldn't tell you what their strategies are. Working on improving your study skills is a fun process of becoming aware of how you do organize and remember some things and then finding ways to do that more easily, more effectively, and more efficiently. Our brains hold lots of facts and information. The trick is finding the ways that work for you to put facts together into chunks or groups so you can remember more information by grouping it together and putting it with things you already know. Some people can remember by making pictures or outlines; other people use strategies like making up acronyms or using rhythms or songs, like when you learned the alphabet.

Another part of working on study skills is learning how to keep your work organized. There are lots of ways to make this simple, easy, and almost fun! I didn't learn good study skills til I at the end of college, so I love helping students find their talents sooner!
