Welcome Students! I am a teacher in Colorado who has worked in elementary schools in Aurora and Centennial the last few years. I am now working in after school programs in Denver. This also means I have had my background checked by CDE and 3 districts in Colorado. I enjoy teaching and meeting you where you are struggling as that is where the learning can really take place. We have fun when you work with me but I also have big goals for everyone and ask you to be a hard worker. I believe education should always be much more than a job training plan and instead be a way for you to reach out and learn for yourself regardless of your goals.

My specialties include Everyday Math and how to supplement that program, writing as a published writer and instilling a love of reading in students. I also know French and love to speak it when I get the chance. I have worked with many students who speak languages other than English and support literacy in more than one language.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in the state of Colorado for grades K-6. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant, Substitute Teacher in long term assignments and by personal requests and as a classroom teacher. I am very familiar with the curriculum and standards for all elementary grades including both Everyday Math and Investigations Math. I love building the literacy and math skills of beginning students. I have experience with students who have specific learning issues as well as students who are gifted and need a challenge and support. Many of my students have been ESL students and are developing English skills as well as learning in their first language.

You should know that I make learning fun while focusing on developing the core skills all kids need to excel. I have a variety of tools from the different classrooms and districts I have worked in. We can have a great time meeting the needs of your student.

Sewing

I have been sewing since I was a child (over 30 years ago). I have sewn clothing for myself and others, costuming, crafts and quilts. As a short woman, I have often adapted patterns to ensure that the fit was correct as well as still proportioned as in pants that need tapering. I am proficient in machine sewing, basic sewing machine maintenance and hand sewing.

Study Skills

I would love to help you with study skills. I have been a successful student in both classroom and on-line schools.

I have been a student myself in college and in an on-line Master's program. I know effective note taking skills for in person lectures, on-line presentations, and from reading resources. I have background helping students break down homework and study tasks to manageable sizes and plan accordingly. Time management and individualizing a study plan are key components I can help a learner with regardless of subject area.

Another key factor in study skills is wading through our information overload to make critical choices about the usefulness of information and how to utilize it effectively. This is essential in writing or research projects. I have a good sense of research and have worked with on-line research many times. I can teach tricks and skills to get through writing and research in a timely and organized manner.
