Thank you for taking the time to view my tutoring profile. I am a passionate instructor of writing and student of multiple disciplines - I love exploring myriad subjects, learning new skills, and sharing this knowledge with others. I've earned an MFA in Creative Writing-Fiction and a BA in Psychology while also studying English & Textual Studies and Graphic Design.
Currently, I work as a teaching professor in a local, prestigious university's Writing Program. Previously I've taught freshman composition in a Boston-based college First Year Writing Program -- both an introduction to college writing and a research-based genre awareness course. For two years, I tutored as a Calderwood Fellow in the Writing Center of a high school in the Boston Public School System. I helped many of these students, and students from WyzAnt, prepare and revise their college applications. Before returning to graduate school, I spent two summers working with preK-5th graders as an AmeriCorps Youth Literacy Worker in Upstate New York.
While in graduate school, I worked as a reader and, briefly, the assistant Fiction Editor for an acclaimed student-run literary magazine. I also taught fiction (and previously nonfiction) in EmersonWRITES, a program through which students in the Boston Public School System can take creative writing workshops in a college setting.
I was a graphic designer in Emerson College's FYWP and am currently the Production and Design editor for a journal of undergraduate writing at my current institution. In the past, I have worked as a freelance designer and photographer, and have been the marketing coordinator at an architecture firm.
I believe in life-long education, student-centered teaching, and collaborative learning. It is my belief that communication in all of its forms -- verbal, written, visual, etc. -- is of utmost importance. This is why I am dedicated to the task of helping others become skilled readers and producers of communication.
While it may seem as though my recent education and experience focuses on language and writing, I am passionate about so many subjects -- including psychology, design, math, and science -- and continue to learn as much as I can both inside and outside of the classroom.
As part of my graphic design minor, I took courses in the Adobe Creative Suite software. My initial training used CS3 but I've learned and mastered each new addition of InDesign. For the last seven years, I've done freelance and nonprofit work--designing logos, brochures, posters, fliers, branding, etc.--for a variety of clients. I've tutored others in using Illustrator and InDesign. In my current position, I am the Production and Design Editor for a literary magazine (for which I use CS6 InDesign).
