University of Notre Dame (Mechanical Engineer)
Northwestern University, Department of Physical Therapy, DPT (Graduate Coursework)
I recently graduated with my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Northwestern University. Here, I gained a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, as well as other classes specific to a physical therapy curriculum. Additionally, while I was enrolled at NU, I was selected by the faculty to serve as a tutor to 1st year students in the program in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology.
I also have a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. I have extensive coursework in math and science, but also took Advanced Placement courses in History and English in high school. Additionally, Notre Dame requires each student to obtain a broad liberal arts foundation regardless of major, which enables me to think critically about a variety of topics and present topics from different angles to students when necessary. Also, due to my math and science background, I will work with students on SAT and GRE quantitative sections.
I worked for three years as a development engineer at Motorola. I left the company to return to school to enter the field of physical therapy.
I have done volunteer tutoring in the past for several different groups and paid volunteering in several levels of mathematics. I try to help my students understand things for themselves, rather than trying to have them listen to another lecture. Therefore, I am likely to ask my students many questions to encourage them to think through each step or idea themselves. Then I'll help explain something if they get stuck. I believe this approach results in a better understanding and retention of the subject and hopefully will provide enhanced study skills for the future! Kara was a fantastic tutor! She was always prompt and was good about fitting me in for a tutoring session on short notice. Kara was very patient when I had trouble grasping certain Trig concepts and was great at explaining them in a way that I easily understood. I appreciated that she had me to try to work through difficult problems on my own before helping me. I learned and understood more than I could have hoped for with her help and brought my math grade up a whole letter grade.
Kara was great!
Kara has successfully guided me through my statistics course with good humor and lots of patience! Kara is able to take difficult concepts and explain them in a manner that is easy to understand. She is prepared every time we meet and has made what was something I dreaded into a much better experience. I highly recommend her as a tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
