My name is Derek N, and I am currently enrolled at Colorado School of Mines as a BioChemical Engineer with lots of experience in tutoring math, science and chess. Over the last several years I have discovered a variety of methods to help students grasp new and challenging concepts. One of my main goals is to help students develop studying methods that promote success throughout their entire academic career. If you are looking for an experienced tutor who loves to see his students thrive; then I look forward to hearing from you.

Algebra 1

Many students struggle when they first take algebra because this course requires a new way of thinking. Instead of having defined numerical answers, students must try to grasp the concept of a variable. Most students whom struggle with algebra, trigonometry and calculus have difficulty with recognizing patterns.

This is the most common course people ask me for tutoring in. I have developed several methods for helping students understand the new concepts while developing pattern recognition skills for future courses.

Chemistry

Many students struggle when they first take chemistry because this course does not really build upon any of their previous courses. Most students whom struggle in chemistry have difficulty taking in a flood of new information all at once.

My chemistry students benefit most by developing memorization skills. Students tutored in chemistry also see improvement in biology, calculus, and even foreign language.

Chess

I am a master ranked United States Chess Federation chess player with experience in teaching chess. This last year I was paid to teach a 4th grade chess club after school every Thursday. I am extremely patient and focus on teaching my students how to leverage their strengths though unique play styles.

Geometry

Many students struggle when they first take geometry because this course does not directly build upon any of their previous courses. Most students whom struggle in geometry have difficulty with visual pattern recognition.

My geometry students benefit most by expanding their memorization and visual skills. The knowledge and study skills developed during geometry tutoring help students in physics, advanced chemistry, trigonometry, art and racquet sports.

Study Skills

When I first meet a student (independent of the course) my first goal is to determine the root cause for them struggling in that subject. The three primary areas my students tend to struggle with is pattern recognition, memorization and identifying the type of problem. Once I understand how my student thinks, I develop a study strategy for them that is unique to how they process information.
