I am excited to share my extensive experience as a student, professional, teacher, and parent - all of which lends me a unique insight into the needs of students no matter what their stage in academic and career development. I hold a Master's degree in Applied Geography and am the GIS team lead for Army Strategic Command; I have advanced skills in GIS, digital cartography, and environmental studies. I also minored in English, have exemplary skills in grammar and critical analysis, and am a published writer.

My teaching experience includes peer tutoring and graduate-level English courses at the University of Colorado's Writing Center, as well as adjunct faculty positions with Pikes Peak Community College and the University of Colorado. Sample courses taught include Remote Sensing, Physical Geology, and Geographic Writing. I have also been a guest lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Having raised three children, I have plenty of experience helping them through the hurdles of homework and college preparatory exams, to include both the SAT and ACT.

My evening and weekend availability is very flexible, and knowing how last-minute disasters can derail a schedule, I offer a lenient 8-hour cancellation policy with makeup sessions. I can conduct lessons in your home, a nearby library, a coffee shop - wherever the student is most comfortable. I also encourage regular feedback so I can consistently succeed in meeting your goals. I look forward to hearing from you, and will respond to inquiries promptly!

English

I minored in English while attaining my degree in Geography. As an undergraduate, I worked as a peer tutor at the University of Colorado's Writing Center, and helped students to improve their grammar, writing style, and understanding of literature. As a graduate assistant instructor at the Writing Center, I taught fundamental and advanced grammar and syntax. I have also completed extensive coursework in literature and critical analysis.

Geography

I have a Master's degree in Applied Geography, with advanced technical skills in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). My Bachelor's degree is in Geography and Environmental Studies, with a minor in English. I work as the GIS Team Lead for Army Strategic Command, and am a recognized expert in coordinate systems, projections, datums, digital cartography, and world geography.

Geology

Although my degree is in Geography, I have mastered coursework in both Physical and Historical Geology. I have a keen interest in natural science and love explaining geologic processes to my children in order to better understand the world around them. I taught Intro to Physical Geology as an adjunct faculty member at Pikes Peak Community College.

Grammar

As a graduate assistant instructor at the Writing Center, I taught fundamental and advanced grammar and syntax. In my position with Army Strategic Command, I am regularly called on to proofread briefings and reports due to my talent at discerning even the most minor grammatical error. I have never met another person who actually gets excited about the prospect of diagramming sentences like I do.

Literature

I have completed extensive coursework in literature and critical analysis at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I am a voracious reader and writer, and understand how to draw out even deeply hidden or subtle themes from a written work. My Master's thesis involved using American Literature to explore the human-nature relationship in the 20th century.

Proofreading

As a technical team lead, I regularly review my team members reports for readability, grammar, syntax, and clarity. My experience as a peer tutor and grammar instructor honed my skills in calling out errors and correcting them quickly. I am able to proofread multiple genres, to include technical reports, critical analysis, fiction, business documents, reports, and correspondence.

Reading

Having learned to read at the age of two and rarely stopping since, I have a solid grasp on all elements of the subject. With a comprehension of the basic building blocks of grammar and sentence structure as well as the broader elements of theme and purpose, I am well equipped to teach students how to approach reading anything from short passages to novels.

Vocabulary

I minored in English while attaining my degree in Geography. As an undergraduate, I worked as a peer tutor at the University of Colorado's Writing Center, and helped students to improve their grammar, writing style, and understanding of literature. As a graduate assistant instructor at the Writing Center, I taught fundamental and advanced grammar and syntax. I have also completed extensive coursework in literature and critical analysis.

Writing

I have written extensively throughout my academic and professional careers. My master's thesis involved the exploration of literature as a method to explore geographic themes. I have been published in trade magazines and college tutorials, and was the co-author of a major trade study. I am especially skilled in critical analysis, and was regularly lauded by my professors for my writing style. Working as a tutor in the University of Colorado's Writing Center gave me the experience of transferring my knowledge to others.
