I have been working in the photography field for over 10 years and hold an MFA in photography for the academy of art university in SFO. I also have been teaching photography and image manipulation at the Art Institute of Charlotte for the past year.
As a teacher, my main goal is to motivate students to do their best and extend their own personal limits. I feel my passion for photography carries on into my classroom and make me strive to challenge, inspire and engage my students to grow in their craft and as a human. I devise programs, according to syllabus requirements, that expand on previous knowledge and encourage students to explore new and interesting possibilities. Behind every artistic theory and technical argument is the actual practice of Art. I prefer to teach though demonstrations and small group exercise/collaborations by conducting mini assignments during class time. I hope to encourage students to construct their own learning in an environment that stimulates and helps them to realize their full potential.
My second goal is to challenge my students. I believe that every student possesses unique capabilities and my job as a teacher is to challenge and help the them to find their unique skills and visions by given the appropriate support and guidance. I encourage my students to share their options and discuss art and artist inside and outside the classroom. In order to engage my classes I use tools like group/individuals presentations, art museum visits and a Facebook discussion group. I always encourage my students to ask questions, and I am straightforward about not having all the answers. When I get “stuck” I will seek the input of colleagues, books or the Internet. In my next class I will share the answers and the process I went through to discover them. I want my students to understand that I am open to their thoughts and opinions and that there is always something new and exiting to learn.
Lastly I strive to teach my students the necessary tools to become successful in their field. Besides the necessarily technical skills there is also a sense of curiosity, open mindedness and a thirst for knowledge I am trying to teach my students. I constantly try to engage my students to reach out of the classroom. I encourage them to get involved with local associations and taking part in competitions.
