I hold an A.A. from Pikes Peak Community College and am currently studying English at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. In the past, I've volunteered as an assistant teacher during the summer session at Blackburn Elementary in Independence, MO. Throughout my time in college, I have become acquainted with facilitatory styles of tutoring in particular, and I tend to rely on this type of instructional method. No tutoring session should consist of providing facts and formulas alone; students also have conceptualizations and ideas within them already that can continually be brought out to the forefront. Students learn through hands-on experience, not the mere acquiring of head knowledge. It is my firm belief that, as Jeff Brooks of Seattle Pacific University argues, "the tutor's activity should focus on the student" and that "if, at the end of the session, a paper [or understanding] is improved, it should be because the student did all the work."
