I have been in education for close to twenty years on both the elementary and secondary school level. This includes all subject areas in elementary school as well as the language arts, social studies and science in middle school in combination with fifteen years as a professional reading tutor. I am also a native Spanish speaker in addition to having extensive academic and classroom experience working with students with special needs. I have a great love of learning which I am anxious to share with the students I would be tutoring.
I have a over 46 college credits in elementary education as well as over ten years of experience. I have worked with students who were behind in reading and writing as well as those who were English second language learners and whose first language was Spanish as I am a native Spanish speaker. I have spent many summers volunteering my services to programs in the San Luis Valley of Colorado that teach English to ESL children and adults. In addition, I have personal experience in the process as I was in an ESL program as an elementary and secondary student. As a bilingual teacher, I have the knowledge of how to instruct in the specifics of the English language to include phonics, reading, and writing in a manner that best serves an individual who is learning a second language. In my teaching assignments I had ESL students in my classroom as well as assisted in the ESL classroom at my school.
I have taught reading as both an educator and volunteer for close to 15 years. Teaching phonics means helping students hear the sounds of the different letters then helping them put the letters together to form words then sentences. It is important to teach these skills in a sequence and use the skills taught on a regular basis by giving the students plently of opportunity for practice.
Experienced in teaching Spanish.
24 hours of Spanish classes at the college level.
I have a Masters degree in elementary and special education in addition to over fifteen years of classroom experience. In addition, I am also a volunteer reading teacher for students who are reading below their grade level. My experience with students with special needs include learning disabilities, autism, severe needs, as well as students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. My many years of teaching has allowed me the ability to utilize many types of teaching methods that allow the student to use their unique way of learning to make the educational experience personalized and enjoyable. I also take great pride in the professional relationship I maintain with the parents of my students and consider them a partner in the tutoring.
