I am a licensed Special Education Teacher and Secondary Social Studies Teacher. I have worked with students with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. I am completing my final two courses in UCCS's Reading Specialist Dyslexia Focus Program. This program has been recognized by the International Dyslexia Association: "In 2012, The International Dyslexia Association awarded this program with the highest category recognition stating: "Teachers who complete this program will know the expectations of identifying and remediating students who struggle learning to read and students who are behind in their reading level."-International Dyslexia Association, 2012 As a part of this program, I have completed the training and practicum for Hill Springs reading and writing instruction using Hill Rap and Hill Write, which is currently being used in school districts in Colorado Springs.
I also taught at an alternative school for at-risk middle and high school students. Many of these students, while not having any diagnosed learning disability, were far behind their peers in academics. Many students were struggling with second-fourth grade reading and writing levels, and struggling with basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals). I was responsible for instruction in math, social studies, science, health, aesthetics, and career/college prep. I found it very rewarding to help students with a long history of academic struggling and failure to succeed.
