My name is Renee. I have over 8 years experience as a teacher and tutor. My teaching credential is from California and it is for bilingual elementary education(Spanish/English), with a supplemental authorization to teach math through 9th grade. I have experience teaching English and Spanish as second languages, as well as 3rd grade all-inclusive classroom. Now I am a work-from-home mom for our 3-year-old. I lived in Costa Rica for a year as a missionary teacher at a Christian school and am fluent in Spanish. I have experience tutoring math through pre-calculus, writing, reading, test-prep, and Spanish. My mission is to teach my students how to become independent thinkers and how to find solutions on their own. I also teach students perseverance and work-ethic at the same time by praising them to success. Ideally, I work to teach my students not to need me anymore... I try to work myself out of a job!

Algebra 1

We'll start by taking a look at your student's material (study guide, homework, text book, etc.) to determine his/her proficiency in the subject. We'll work through the assignment and I'll help fill in gaps of understanding and occasionally spend time teaching basic concepts that may be missing. Math concepts build on themselves, so if a basic concept is missing, it can cause a lot of confusion for a long time. By filling in the gaps, your student will gain confidence and independence.

Algebra 2

We'll start by taking a look at the material you are currently working on in class, and help you through difficulties. As we do that, we'll spend time as needed going back to cement foundational understanding that may be lacking, so you feel confident in your understanding of Algebra. We'll go at your speed and my students almost always walk away from a math tutoring session with me feeling empowered and enlightened.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the beginning of high school level math and is the foundation for understanding. Understanding prealgebra concepts is essential to success in math for the rest of high school. We'll start by evaluating your student's skill level in math and make sure we fill in any gaps that are missing. Speech, reading, writing and listening comprehension are all very different skills and competency in one doesn't necessarily mean competence in a different area are a given. We'll approach the language from each angle. My instruction can be supplemental (help with a class material) or I can develop a curriculum tailored to you.

I passed the CBEST test almost ten years ago when I became licensed as a teacher in California. I have 4 years formal teaching experience and 4 years tutoring experience. Two of my years teaching were in San Diego, California.

ESL/ESOL

I am a fluent and bi-literate in English and Spanish. I learned Spanish 9 years ago when I moved to Costa Rica for a year. I also have a BCLAD teaching credential as a teacher in California. The BCLAD credential licenses me to teach a bilingual classroom. I have two years teaching experience in bilingual classrooms in California. I have four years teaching ESL experience.

CBEST

I have four years of teaching experience and took the CBEST test 11 years ago while getting my teaching credentials in California. I passed it on my first attempt. I have years of experience working with students as they prepare for exams like the CBEST, ACT, SAT, PRAXIS, etc. We will work through test-taking strategies as well as fill in understanding for the material specific to the exam you are taking.
