About Noel

I recently received a message from the mother of one of my students:
Hi Noel, hope your summer is going well. The AP test scores came out this week and E*** got a 5 on the Calculus, which is the highest score. She was very excited and wanted you to know. Thanks again, M****

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a pre-engineering and engineering student, I took courses in a wide variety of mathematics and science including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, differential equations, linear analysis, numerical analysis, basic and advanced physics. In later engineering courses, I used the mathematics and science in advanced engineering courses. I have been a working engineer for the past three decades, applying the math and physics I learned as a student. I have also taught at levels from fourth grade through college and have enjoyed the experience. I have helped many students achieve success.

I have found three primary obstacles to students' learning math and physics:

1. Motivation. Many students do not see any relationship between math and physics and their lives, now or in the future. I discuss with students how math can be used to describe, understand and control the world around them from their day to day activities and decisions to the world and cosmos we live in.

2. Lack of confidence. Students have been convinced that they are incapable of learning math. I show students that mathematical concepts are logical, coherent and can be understood and that tools can be applied simply to arrive at answers to problems.

3. Teaching methods. Most math and physics teaching consists of instructors lecturing by working problems before a class of students. In my experience, students can follow the steps the instructor takes to solve a problem but are left in the dark as to how the instructor knew, and the student is supposed to know, what steps to take to solve a problem. I help students learn how to think about math and problem solving and how to see, the steps leading to a problem solution.

Subjects I am qualified to tutor include:
Algebra - all levels
Trigonometry
Geometry
Calculus
Pre-calculus
Physics
Differential Equations
Matlab
Test taking anxiety is also a major problem with many students. I teach specific easy to understand steps which dramatically reduce or even eliminate this problem. Many of my students have achieved major improvement in grades simply by employing these steps for taking tests.

I enjoy working with motivated students; my students seem to enjoy my teaching approach and many benefit dramatically. I am able to explain complex concepts in simple terms that make them much more understandable than typical academic teaching methods do.

I can recommend high quality, inexpensive reference books and texts to support tutoring now which will become lifetime references for students as they progress in academia and career.

I look forward to tutoring students at all levels.

Contact me and we can set up a meeting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace engineering and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. These degrees included roughly 30 hours of undergraduate and graduate level mathematics courses which included topics from college algebra, basic trigonometry, geometry up to differential equations and numerical analysis. Much of my other course work and my subsequent career applied these methods.

Algebra 2

With an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, I have studied mathematics extensively. While obtaining the two degrees, I took over thirty hours of undergraduate and graduate level mathematics courses. The methods that are part of algebra 2 are deeply ingrained in all the course work and classes that I have taken. I have used the basic principles of algebra 2 throughout my career. I have tutored algebra 2 extensively and have had success in conveying complex topics in simple, clear terms that are easy to understand.

Calculus

Calculus is the heart and soul of an engineer's training and career. I have earned a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering. In the course of obtaining these degrees, I have studied calculus in many different forms; I have used calculus throughout my career. I have tutored several students in calculus. I focus on teaching the basic principles and having students, themselves, work problems with my assistance; this allows students to understand concepts more easily. Once basic concepts are understood, calculus becomes a powerful and valuable tool, both in school and subsequent professional career.

Differential Equations

I am a graduate engineer with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering. I have studied and used differential equations in school and in my career. I feel I am qualified to tutor in this field.

Fortran

I first learned FORTRAN in 1978. I taught FORTRAN to engineering students at San Diego State University 1980-82. I used FORTRAN up until it fell out of favor in the engineering world in the mid 1990's.

Geometry

Geometry is fundamental to the type of engineering work I do. I first began studying geometry in High School and contiued its study through out my education resulting in a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering. Since graduation, over three decades ago, I have utilized the concepts of geometry continuously in my work.

MATLAB

I have been using Matlab for roughly ten years day to day as an active engineer.

Mechanical Engineering

I hold a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from San Diego State University. I have taught part time and tutored from the middle school to college undergraduate level. I have been a working engineer for 30+ years. With these credentials, I am qualified to tutor topics in mechanical engineering.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of the cornerstones of engineering. My first studies of trigonometry were in High School. In earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering I furthered my studies of trigonometry extensively. I have used trigonometric concepts on a regular basis in my three decades long career.
