My best experiences as a teacher have always happened when I work with students in small groups or one on one. As a recent graduate of the Eastman School of Music, I have worked hard to learn about the language of music, and I am inspired by its expressive power every day. I enjoy communicating this love to others, either through my performances, or through my written work, and I have earned awards as both performer and lecturer.

I am an experienced instructor in music theory, and I have significant experience mentoring and advising students with major academic assignments. As a teacher, I have always tried to challenge my students to meet their fullest potential, while also guiding them through a process that works for them individually. As a proofreader and editor, I have enjoyed helping students and colleagues refine their work, communicating their ideas effectively in well-supported arguments. I always do my best to support students as they work on how they learn, preparing them to succeed not only on a single project, but also for future projects and assignments.

I have always held myself to a very high standard, and I will seek feedback so I can adjust my methods, all in the hope of helping each student succeed. I do keep a 24 hour cancellation policy, though I am willing to be as flexible as my schedule would allow. For tutoring, I am happy to travel to meet students.

I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with you, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

As a graduate of the MA in music theory program at Eastman, I have experience teaching aural skills at Eastman as instructor and teaching assistant. I have reviewed skills such as sight-reading, sight-singing, error detection, rhythm performance, and dictation, among other tasks. Students have also been taught how to aurally analyze music in dictation settings. This degree was recently completed (May 2014), and I am happy to send transcripts in support.

General Music

I have graduate degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music - two in piano accompanying and Chamber Music (DMA, MM), and one in Piano Performance (BM). For all, I needed to pass general music courses that include theory fundamentals, music theory, and music history. In all, I have maintained an A average, with strong reviews from instructors concerning the quality of my work and knowledge of the field. I am happy to submit any transcripts if requested.

Music History

For all music degrees, I have needed to take some classes in music history. I have experience in general history courses (BM), specific history topics (middle ages), and seminar courses (nineteenth Century American and German Music, Development of the Mass as genre, and History and Influences of Wagner on Music). In all, I have maintained an A average, with work deemed high in quality and with deep understanding.

Music Theory

I have some experience teaching fundamentals, analysis, written theory, and aural skills to secondary and college students. I also hold degrees in Piano and Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music and Duquesne University.

Piano

My primary work has been as a pianist, having played since the age of six, and holding three degrees in some form of piano performance. I have won awards at all stages of my educational career, including Western Pennsylvania Steinway Society Performing Artist award, and Piano Accompanying Departmental awards, among others. My performances have been acclaimed by audiences, and I pride myself in control of the instrument in color, articulation, and sound. I am happy to support my claims with recordings or transcripts, should they be required.

Proofreading

As an instructor and teaching assistant at the University of Rochester, I helped many of my students and colleagues develop, edit, and fine tune projects, papers, and essays. I am well versed in MLA and Chicago style formatting, and I am happy to help develop essay and project topics, with thoughts about how to research and to find the support needed for your ideas. My own research has earned me academic acclaim and awards at the University of Rochester during my Masters and Doctoral degrees.
