As a high school English teacher for twenty-five years, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students in the United States, Singapore, and Jordan. My experience, coupled with two master's degrees---one in English literature, and the other in teaching English as a second language---have helped to make my instruction highly effective in developing students' understanding, skills, and ability to think critically. My first responsibility is to understand what students already understand and what they need to learn. To gain this information, I focus on asking open-ended questions that encourage students to reflect, recall, and synthesize information. I believe the purpose of an education is to empower students to think for themselves. To do this, they need to develop skills (composing, analyzing, reading, listening, and thinking) and habits of mind (for example, self-confidence, curiosity, skepticism, fair-mindedness, and integrity). I find the process of working one-on-one with students deeply satisfying, and I look forward to working with you!
